Thou Shalt Not Mess With Sir Alex
By: chris | September 15th, 2009
These words stand as first hand advice from Diego Forlan, the ex-Red Devil whose stint is more famous for sitter missing and shirtlessness than any sort of productivity in the footballing realm.
If you ask most people just why Diego was booted from Manchester, they’ll point to his glittering 10 goal in three years record. Others will simply cite an overall sense of general rubbishness. But Forlan put the speculation to rest, revealing that he was booted from United for his…boots.
Who doesn’t love a “Thou art not holier than Sir Alex” story? Not I.
“Ferguson wanted me to play with long studs, the interchangeable ones that suit wet pitches, but I feel more comfortable in short ones.
“I agreed to change but I didn’t and, against Chelsea, I slipped in front of goal and wasted a chance.
“Afterwards, I rushed to the dressing room to change boots but Ferguson caught me. He grabbed the boots and threw them. That was my last game for United.”
They lost, and soon Diego lost his United member card. According to the infallible Wikipedia, Forlan was sold less than one week from the end of this game.
On one hand, most blatant acts of blatant defiance by fringe members will likely result in a super quick job relocation program, and Sir Alex is certainly no exception. In fact, Sir Alex is probably the last guy you’d want to disobey. The official ManU lexicon reads ’suggestion’ as m-a-n-d-a-t-o-r-y.
But on the other, more important hand, Alex might be regretting that mandatory suggestion: provided he stuck with his comfortable favorites, short studs have won Diego Forlan two European Golden Boots since leaving Manchester.
Who needs to squabble over studs when Diego clearly is one?
