Top One-Man Offenses in Europe
By: Ian Rose | May 25th, 2008
We all know that Cristiano Ronaldo (love him or hate him) took home this year’s European Golden Boot for his 31 Premier League goals. A magnificent year for Ronaldo, but he had plenty of help, with a couple of guys named Tevez and Rooney alongside him that can do a pretty bit of goalscoring themselves when they are in the mood. To take a look at the importance of individual players, I put together a different sort of Golden Boot table. After the bump, the top ten scorers in European domestic leagues this season, ranked by percentage of team goals.
A few disclaimers before we get to the list. First, I’ve tried to search through stats on every league in Europe, but I’m sure it’s possible I missed someone. If I have, let me know. Second, to eliminate the players on just plain awful teams, and to keep the list manageable, a minimum of 15 goals are necessary to qualify a player for the list. Okay, here goes.
1. Georgi Hristov (Botev, Bulgaria) – 21/36 = 58.3% of team goals
2. Oleksandr Hladky (Metalurh Donetsk, Ukraine) – 17/34 = 50%
3. Joseph Akpala (Charleroi, Belgium) – 18/41 = 43.9%
4. Marco Borrellio (Genoa, Italy) – 19/44 = 43.2%
5. Zelimir Terkes (Zadar, Croatia) – 21/49 = 42.9%
6. David (Doxa Katokopias, Cyprus) – 16/38 = 42.1%
7. Blaise Kufo (Twente, Holland) – 21/52 = 40.4%
8. Daniel Guiza (Mallorca, Spain) – 27/69 = 39.1%
9. Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, England) – 31/80 = 38.8%
10. Ionel Danciulescu (Dinamo, Romania) – 21/55 = 38.2%
Just missing out on the top ten: Roque Santa Cruz (38%), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (36.2%) and Fernando Torres (35.8%).
