Transfer Talk: Bayern Klose the Deal, Tevez Fancies Inter, Nakamura Might say Sayanora
By: Bob | June 26th, 2007
Recognizing that one should always live one’s life by following the words of clichés, the Transfer Talk desk at The Offside’s global world headquarters has taken a few days off from our round-the-clock transfer surveillance because we know the summer transfer season is a marathon, not a sprint. Fully rested and properly hydrated (rum in the morning, tequila in the afternoon, death in the evening), we present some of the transfer truths and rumors from the never-ending marathon.
Much like an ugly person looking to improve his appearance through expensive plastic surgery, Bayern Munich have decided it is time to remake its club regardless of the cost. Tuesday the official word was announced that they landed Werder Bremen striker Miroslav Klose for a fee of roughly 10 million euros. The once mighty German giants have now added Klose, Luca Toni, Franck Ribery, Ze Roberto, Jose Ernesto Sosa, Marcell Jansen, Jan Schlaudraff and Hamit Altintop. Total cost: 60 million euros, or roughly the same as my last tummy tuck. On paper Bayern should be the favorite to win the UEFA Cup next year, dontcha think?
If the folks who run Inter Milan play the lottery tonight there is a good chance they will win a big prize. The news coming from the Milan camp is rosy with the official signing of David Suazo and with talk of almost landing much in demand Christian Chivu, as well as the much in demand Carlos Tevez who prefers Inter over Real Madrid. I prefer Italian wine over Spanish wine so I know exactly how Tevez feels, but for my money the wine in Portugal is the best so he should consider playing there.
Meanwhile, the other team in Milan is trying to overcome the fact they were beat out for Suazo by supposedly chasing after Samuel Eto’o. This is a bit like watching a cat chase after its tail only slightly more dizzying.
Lost in the shuffle of all the young 20-somethings that are owned by Manchester United is the striker Giuseppe Rossi. After spending five months on loan with Parma last season, Rossi might be there for good, or until Parma turn around and sell him to another team for bundles of money in a couple of years.
David Trezeguet has been rumored to be leaving Juventus since about four weeks before he first signed with them. He is apparently not going anywhere for now, or for another four years, if you believe that he will live out his newly signed contract extension.
Speaking of contracts, the Japanese free kick wonder and all around pleasant fellow Shunsuke Nakamura may be trying to get out of his contract with Celtic so that he can sign with one of the “four big clubs” chasing after him. Celtic have been quick to deny that he is trying to leave, which means he probably is.
Yaya Toure has said bye-bye to Monaco and yes-yes to Barcelona. The midfielder is being touted as the next Partrick Vieria. I remember being impressed with him during the World Cup but I also remember drinking 7,000 beers and getting about two minutes of sleep back then (and last night).
There is semi-official evidence that Santino Quaranta will be leaving the tranquil town of Los Angeles to go the bright lights, big city of Kansas City. His is the 9,000th player move the Galazy have made this season, one short of the always changing cats at Toronto FC who have signed T&T international Collin Samuel to bolster their front line. I thought he was older than 25. Might be a decent pickup for Toronto.
