Transfer Talk: Everyone’s Going Back to Spurs
By: Daryl | January 5th, 2009
The transfer window is now well and truly open, and the rumour roundabout is already spinning out of control.
The papers are doing Harry Redknapp’s wheeler/dealer image no harm by linking Spurs with at least three players this morning. The Jermain Defoe deal looks all but done for around £15m, with The Telegraph even suggesting JD will be playing for Spurs in the Carling Cup semi-final tomorrow night. That’s unless Juventus beat them to it.
Defoe could be joined at Spurs by Pascal Chimbonda who’s not happy at Sunderland and has seen his move to Lyon go up in smoke. Any more ex-Spurs player’s going back to White Hart Lane? Gary Mabbut maybe?
Stewart Downing is keen to take his bag of trick (singular, not a typo) to Spurs, and has handed in a transfer request today. Downing’s been linked with a move away from ‘Boro so many times, and ended up staying just as many times, so will feel weird when this one actually does go through.
Milan’s quest for defenders under the age of 50 has taken them to Liverpool, and a possible bid for Daniel Agger. Channel 4 seem convinced that Agger could move, but I don’t see Liverpool selling a defender with the Prem title in the balance. Do you? I’d suggest Milan just enter a local 30+ league and clean up.
Real Madrid are keen on Werder Bremen’s Diego, and might be offering Rafael van der Vaart in a swap deal of some sort. Because swapping van der Vaart for Diego will solve all their defensive problems.
But easily the silliest rumour comes from the good old Daily Express, who’ve spotted that Theo Walcott is out of contract next summer, and would be available for just £400,000 (his training costs at Arsenal) if he doesn’t sign a new contract before 2010. All I can say is: Great work from Walcott’s agent to get this story in the paper and give Arsenal some extra motivation to offer a new contract.
