UEFA Cup Semifinals: A Spanish Fiesta
By: Bob | April 12th, 2007
That other tournament in Europe wrapped up its quarterfinals stage today, which means that it is just about time for us all to start paying a bit of attention to it. Heading into the day three Spanish teams held the lead after the first leg and now that the final whistle has blown it is three Spanish teams and one from Germany that will play in the semifinals.
Tournament holders Sevilla paid a visit to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham and they showed that they are probably the best team left in this competition and that Spurs were probably the best team no longer left in this competition. Spurs looked all but dead after allowing two Sevilla goals in the first eight minutes, but they fought back with two second half goals to draw even. Sevilla advance on aggregate 4-3, however.
The other scores:
Werder Bremen 4-1 AZ Almaar (4-1 ag)
Benfica 0-0 Espanyol (2-3 ag)
Osasuna 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen (4-0 ag)
That sets up a pair of semifinal matchups with the first leg being played on April 26 and the return leg on May 3.
Sevilla v Osasuna
Espanyol v Werder Bremen
Since there is not a firing squad in place to shoot me if I am wrong, I will offer up the following picks. Sevilla will go through and they will face Werder Bremen in the final.
