UEFA Cup: Sevilla Lift the Trophy Again
By: Bob | May 16th, 2007
The all-Spanish UEFA Cup final turned out to be a thriller with Sevilla knocking off Espanyol in 3-1 in penalties after the game ended 2-2. Sevilla keeper Andres Palop came up huge with three saves in the penalties. Sevilla is the first team to win the trophy in back-to-back years since Real Madrid did it in the mid-80s. They also will be the first team in Spain to win the treble if they go on to win the Copa del Rey and the Spanish League title.
Espanyol put up a valiant effort in the final and had to play a man down after the 68th minute when Moisés Hurtado was sent off after picking up his second yellow card. Sevilla’s Freddy Kanoute scored 15 minutes into extra time but Espanyol fought back to tie it thanks to a goal by Jonatas in the 115th minute. The game then went to the always exciting but never quite satisfying penalties where Palop was the hero
The Champions League final will have to be really good to be more exciting than this one. Here are the goals from the game and some blurry video of the penalties.
Adriano Correia scores for Sevilla in the 18th minute
Albert Riera scores for Espanyol in the 28th minute
Freddie Kanoute for Sevilla in the 105th minute
Jonatas for Espanyol in the 115th minute

I wanted Sevilla to win. I rooted for Sevilla through the whole game. Sevilla deserved to win. So why did the ending feel like a letdown?
Espanyol really fought it out to the end, and it’s kind of sad that they go out like this.

Excellent game though the ref was harsh to send Moises off, but what lousy penalties from Espanyol.

That run by Adriano was nice and he finished even better. The game was good overall except for some of the calls.
