UEFA.com Team of the Year: Who Got Screwed?
By: Martha | January 19th, 2008
After soliciting the opinion of the unwashed masses — to the tune of over 3.75 million (seriously, we all really need to find more to do) votes — UEFA.com have announced their 2007 team of the year, based on the teams all of us submitted via their fancy website last month.
As you’d expect, the team is Champions League-heavy, with three players from holders AC Milan (leading vote-getter Kaka, Clarence Seedorf and Alessandro Nesta) and one — Steven Gerrard — from beaten finalists Liverpool. From Serie A, the Milan trio are joined by striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Gerrard also has three companions from the EPL: John Terry, Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo. The other tree members of the team come from Spain, in the form of Iker Casillas in goal (that’s what Gigi Buffon gets for missing out on Champions League play last season), and Daniel Alves and Eric Abidal as his wingbacks. (For those of you who don’t like words, there’s video of the team here.)
So, that’s who’s on the team — what really matters, though, is who’s missing. Who was left out in the cold so Nesta could make the team, just because he wears a red and black shirt? And, by the same token, should someone have been left out to make room for Nesta’s teammate, Andrea Pirlo? Are there Ligue 1 or Bundesliga players who were unfairly slighted?
