Uruguay Striker Dario Silva’s Leg Amputated
By: Bob | September 25th, 2006
Occasionally reality creeps into the world of sports and sadly today is one of those days. Uruguayan striker Dario Silva has had his leg amputated following a car crash that has left him in a medically induced coma in Montevideo. Silva was traveling in a pick up truck that lost control and slammed into a lamppost. Ex-footballers Elbio Papa and Dardo Pereira were in the vehicle but did not sustain injuries.
Silva played 46 times for Uruguay, scoring 14 times before retiring following Uruguay’s qualification playoff loss to Australia. He spent his professional career bouncing around clubs from Italy to Spain and England. While in Italy he earned the nickname “sa pibinca”, the Sardinian word for “nuisance” because of his energy around the goal.
Our thoughts go out to Silva and his family.
