US Open Cup: Bavarians at the Gate
By: Bob | June 26th, 2007
It is round two of the US Open Cup on Tuesday evening. Our favorite pub team has been eliminated so now it is time to jump on another amateur team’s bandwagon. The focus this time around is on the mighty lads from Bavarian SC. They are the only team below the PDL level to make it out of the first round after they took care of the USL Second Division Cincinnati Kings 1-0 a couple of weeks ago.
Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Bavarian SC are no strangers to the US Open Cup. This is their fifth appearance in the past nine years, including a run in 2003 in which they advanced to the third round and lost to their crosstown professional rivals Milwaukee Wave.
The club has a heritage that is among the best in the United States. It was started by German immigrants in 1929 under the name Fussball Club Bayern. It has captured four National Amateur Cup championships, including three straight in the beginning of this decade.
This year’s group features Johnny Torres a Colombian-American forward who has played with the Chicago Fire, New England Revolution and the Miami Fushion among other teams before deciding it would be fun to toil away with an amateur club. They also have Scott Dombrowski who will be squaring off against his brother Chad in Tuesday night’s game against the USL First Division Carolina RailHawks. Their younger brother, Neil, plays for the Portland Timbers who are facing the Seattle Sounders in the second round.
Bavarians and brothers and a team after a fictional type of hawk that :”combines the speed and power of the locomotive with the aggressive and fierce nature of a hawk”. That is the US Open Cup. You can catch the Bavarian SC - RailHawks game, as well as two other matches, for free on USL Live. I can assure you that the commentating alone is reason enough to check the games out for a few minutes.

Whether a true fan of the stewards of Oktoberfest or merely antagonistic toward avians, train travel, and combinations thereof, that was a terribly disappointing game. Downright painful, perhaps.
Otherwise it was more entertaining than I expected.
