Uzbekistan Gets Its Man
By: chris | August 26th, 2008
Credit goes where credit is due: FC Bunyodkor is not fucking around. Earlier in the summer you may remember they’d announced they had signed Samuel Eto’o on a six month contract, who went along with the ruse and even flew out to Uzbekistan for the royal treatment at the club’s facilities before hunkering back to Barca. Perfect PR opportunity, unless they were housing severe delusions of grandeur. But now they’ve actually nailed an ex-Barcelona superstar, though this one a bit past it in the form of Rivaldo.
Rivaldo terminated his contract with AEK Athens to make the trek east to footballing nothingness, and he’s making not attempt to hide why:
‘It is a very good proposal and I cannot turn it down. I would like to ask for a million apologies because there is so little time in the transfer window for the club to replace me but it was an exceptional proposal.’
Quite refreshing to hear an athlete call a spade a spade. Let’s face it, if you’re joining a club in, say, Qatar, it’s not about the quality of play and saying “it’s an up-and-coming league” isn’t fooling anyone; so you might as well just say, “yes, I’m joining Al-Whatever because on payday scantily clad women show up at my doorstep with drums of oil“.
And that’s why Rivaldo is going to Uzbekistan. It’s just all about the paper and, at 36 years old, he’s fishing for his last paycheck. Might as well make it a huge one if he’s going to be playing for second tier clubs anyway.
And maybe Ronaldo’s next?
