Watch The FIFA World Player of the Year Gala Live

By: chris | January 12th, 2009

The five final candidates – Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Xavi & Fernando Torres – are in Zurich for the FIFA World Player of the Year crowning this evening (and all rocking some serious casual wear – Sepp must be thrilled). 2000 CET (2p EST), actually, which is, oh, about 15 minutes from this posting. Here are the streams – the last option is looking quite good – for those interested in watching the proceedings. After the jump is a Justin.tv link promising to show the for those needing black ops streaming at their place of employ (working and of high quality on this end – if in French).

Though Cristiano Ronaldo will probably win it, and by a decent enough margin, this one should be a battle of two halfs: Ronaldo’s first half and Lionel Messi post-May. Not that The Messiah wasn’t brilliant in the spring, but his play since the Olympic opening ceremonies has been nothing short of otherworldy. Certainly second to none at the moment (Osasuna silently nod their collective heads). But then again, this is the award of 2008, not half of 2007 and three quarters of 2008, as the Ballon D’Or would seem to indicate. Is there a chance Lionel can pip the award? (Let’s be fair: the rest are just in attendance for the parting gifts.)
