Wayne Rooney is a Scholar-Athlete

wayne-rooney-scholar.jpgIt is an international break week which means that normally the headlines we read are about players getting drunk, beating up other drunks and cheating on their significant others. There’s still time for all that to happen, but for now we are left with stories about how one of the tabloid heroes is hitting the books and developing cultured habits. What is our world coming to?

The tabloid hero in question is Wayne Rooney, who either has hired a really good public relations person or is going about changing his ways. After finding out earlier this week that Rooney has become a wine aficionado, today we learn that he is studying to take his exams in math and English. Who knew he even spoke English?

A source said: “Wayne has had a lot of advice from his United manager Sir Alex Ferguson about how to fill his time away from football.

“Fergie said he should do something constructive.

“Wayne’s girlfriend Coleen has also been encouraging him to get his head in the books. She did well at school and left with 10 GCSEs. If all goes to plan he will sit his GCSEs next summer in maths and English.”

Considering the amount of time he has been missing due to injuries and considering England’s current chances of making Euro 2008, Rooney should have ample opportunity to become edumacated. Good for him. Bad for us tabloids readers.

The headline in The Sun next week will be 'Rooney shags English teacher'.

That's good for him. Don't worry, though, there are still plenty of players who are primed for humiliation.
