We Interrupt this Fight for a Soccer Game

I’d be lying if I told you I spent much time following the U-17 action in Sydney, Australia, but this story did catch my attention. A match between Freeman Sports and Auburn District turned ugly when a fight between a couple of players erupted into a full on brawl that involved 40 to 50 fans. The description from one of the player’s fathers is truly amazing.

“I saw a bloke who was on the phone to the ambulance, kneeling next to an injured player, get kicked in the head,” he told Fairfax. “We truly feared for our children’s lives. I honestly thought the life of the (Freeman) captain was being threatened, there were four guys just kicking him.

“I was amazed the referee was able to get out of there. He and two other match officials locked themselves in the change room … it was sheer, unadulterated savagery.”

At a junior soccer match no less.

I haven’t been able to track down footage of the incident, but I did come across the video below which is almost as frightening. It comes from Russia where the home team Saturn FC and an unidentified opponent go completely mental on one another. Fans get involved and the referee’s arm nearly falls off when he issues about 95 red cards in a row.
