We might end up owning a Football Club after all

beware-owner-t-shirt.JPGPower to the people, my peeps. Remember a few months ago when the My Football Club site was launched with the intention of bringing ordinary folk like you and me together to purchase an English football club? Well lo and behold it might actually happen.

The site has surpassed its goal of having 50,000 people pony up £35 for a share in an unnamed club and now according to the site’s creator Will Brooks there are reportedly clubs eager for you and I to tell them which players to sign and what managers to choose.

Four clubs – from the Football League and the Conference – have been in touch with Brooks to explore the possibility of being taken over by the website.

“To be in a position where clubs are now coming to us is quite an endorsement,” said Brooks.

“A new fan base of tens of thousands will greatly enhance the club’s prospects.

“On top of money from the MyFootballClub members, there will also be a significant boost in ticket and merchandise sales, as well as the potential for more lucrative sponsorship and television deals.”

Our club might not be the best in the world but clearly it is the most optimistic. And perhaps the most novel. I find the whole concept of fans owning a professional sports team fascinating. The pessimist in me (otherwise known as my true personality) thinks this can’t work. Getting people to sign up is one thing. Getting more than one person to agree on big decisions like how to run a business is an entirely different ball of wax. This could be a train wreck or it could be the ultimate fantasy football game.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this all turns out and perhaps someday joining 50,000 others in the owner’s box.

How hard can it be? Anytime you need to make a decision, just put up one of those handy internet polls and go with whatever option gets the most votes. Hilarity ensues.

Sweet. I'm right there with you - signed up a month or so ago. I hope it happens, if only as an interesting experiment. What I'd really like us to do is buy a club with a lot oh history that's fallen on bad times (like Notts County).
