We’d like to Introduce our New Signing, only we didn’t Sign Him
By: Bob | January 4th, 2007
The cameras were in place. The prepared speeches were written. The club’s general manager put on his best Ghutrah and sat next to the player’s agent. What could possibly go wrong? Well, for one thing the player who was being announced as a new member of the club didn’t show up because he didn’t actually sign with the team.
The Luis Figo saga, so aptly documented by our Luis Figo beat reporter Martha on the Italy Offside, took another wonderfully bizarre twist today when the Saudi club Al Ittihad held a press conference that was supposed to announce the signing of Figo, but instead announced that the signing has been delayed due to an “emergency obstacle”.
That emergency obstacle, of course, is the fact that Inter Milan has squelched the move with a statement on their Web site that says: “There are no negotiations for the transfer of Luis Figo to another club. The recent news of a possible transfer of the Portuguese midfielder is, therefore, completely groundless”.
Apparently the Web filters aren’t allowing officials at Al Ittihad to read the Milan site because the club is saying that the deal was temporarily halted because of some financial details and that it will hold another press conference in the future to confirm the transfer’s completion.
Maybe Al Ittihad is delusional or perhaps they simply enjoy holding press conferences?
