Weekend Quiz Answers. (Or: How the HELL Do I Score This?)

By: Laurie | June 14th, 2009

First, if you haven’t taken our Weekend Quiz yet, stop by this post and make your guesses.

And on Friday when I was swapping emails with Daryl on the quiz this weekend, he said to me: (good luck tallying the points though!)

He was not kidding. Even though this is not the kind of quiz where we award actual prizes, we still like to make it fair enough to be fun. But I still have many, many relatives in town, so I don’t have time to check all your answers. So here are my assumptions:

1) YOU did your research for me. Therefore the answers are correct unless I was told otherwise or I knew without research that they weren’t.
2) Latecomers had a harder time of it, given that all the best answers were probably taken, so I’ll list you first.

3) If you named somebody who’d been named before by someone else for the same question, I tried not to count it. But I got four hours of sleep last night and may have missed one. Or two. Or a dozen. (List of what was not counted is at the bottom.)
4) Bonus points for naming the tattoo subject and for giving me links to the players who got yellows for removing their shirts. (Like I said, for verification purposes.) And since so many of you refused to answer #13 (that “10% Luck 20% skill” song ) I gave it double points. Sure, it’s random and unfair for me to do this after the fact. What’s your point? ;-)

(The story behind that question is that any footy blogger who’s been blogging for longer than six months will curl up into a fetal position when this song pops up in yet another highlight compilation. I was just curious to see how many we could find. And I’m actually a bit depressed to see that WMG has been having YouTube disable the audio every time this song is used. Because now what will we complain about?)

All this said, though, I thought this quiz and your answers were very entertaining and informative, and I’ll be using the format again sometime in the future.
And the winners are:

Gold medal/Perfect scores of 16 points (again, with late answering folks listed first:)

Madridista

Brett

Silver (15 points):

Zeik

SP Good catch on Giggs — he did not get a yellow card for taking off his shirt in 1999 because it wasn’t a mandatory card till 2004. (Not that women around the world still have the date of 1 July 2004 wreathed in mourning in their memories. Or anything.) You recovered well with Kanoute and Cobi.

Bronze (14 points):

Aj somehow managed to get me to give him full points for this response to the father-son footballer question:

8. Odds are one of Giuseppe Meazza’s illegitimate children became a top flight footballer (All I could think of was Enzo Zidane, but he’s not top flight yet. I’m too young for this one.) Oh, Sergio Aguero! …Just checked wiki, but he’s not married to Diego’s daughter yet, thought he is the father to Maradona’s grandson. Apparently he also has his name written on his arm in tengwar. I wonder what other tattoos there are at atleti…

Lex Oh, come on, Lex! A shirtless yellow card photo and you would have had silver! Would that have been so hard? And Weston had already grabbed Maldini for the father-and-son question. Still, very creditable performance.

Honorable Mentions (10 or more points)

Shazback — 12
Alexxx — 12

DarthZombie — 10
Weston — 10

More Creativity points To:

Debbie, for filling her quiz almost completely with players with US roots. I had to disallow some because they’d already been guessed, but I salute you for your patriotism. Well done!

And, on a related note, the Tough luck award to:

Debbie, for having a full 6 points disallowed because others had guessed them first. Better luck getting here first next time!

Here are the point totals, followed by answers that were disallowed. If you think I did you wrong (it’s possiblt — it’s been a very long weekend) make your case in the comments.

Weston — 10 answered = 10
Lex — 13 answered + 2 bonus – 1 already guessed = 14 points
Brett — 13 answered + 3 bonus – 0 = a perfect 16 points
DarthZombie — 9 answered +1 bonus – 0 = 10 points
SP — 13 answered +3 bonus – 1 = 15 points
Rob — 11 answered +1 bonus – 0 = 12
Zeik — 13 answered + 3 bonus – 1 = 15
Alexxx — 13 answered +1 bonus – 2 = 12
Shazback — 12 answered + 2 bonus – 2 = 12
Ranjeet — 11 answered – 2 = 9
Dalson — 9 answered – 3 = 6
Scott — 1 answered = 1
AJ — 12 answered + 2 bonus for the two photos -1 for father-son except…what the hell, I’ll give you credit for Kun because you made me laugh = 14
Madridista — 13 answered + 3 bonus = 16
Iggy — 7 answered – 3 = 4
Debbie 13 answered, + 1 bonus – 6 = 8
Matilda — 2 answered = 2
John 8 answered, + 1 for photo, – 1 zidane = 8
Onefrompoland 1 answered = 1
Marcus: 1 answered = 1
1. Finishing career in original country. Dalson, Makelele is a repeat previously guessed by alexxx
2. Tattoo of a name. Rob and Zeik, Beckham was a repeat, guessed a few minutes earlier by SP but I’ll give it to you because SP’s answers didn’t show up at first due to spam filter errors; zeik gets credit because he says Victoria, and Rob and SP said kids;
I’ll give Shazback 1 pt because Simao was guessed by Lex, but Shazback included the details; Ranjeet, Beckham was already guessed; madridista — torres and cannavaro were already guessed, but I’ll give you a random point for tenacity. John gets the point for Cannavaro because he said Daniela (wife) rather than Andrea (son).
3. Captain of club and country. Shazback & Dalson, Maldini was guessed by alexxx; Debbie, Bocanegra was guessed by aj; Iggy, Iker was guessed by Madridista
4. International goal before age 20. Ranjeet, Messi was guessed by Brett; Dalson, Michael Owen was guessed by Rob; Debbie, Jozy was guessed by zeik
5. International goal after 35. Alexxx, Larsson was guessed by Weston; Iggy, Roger Milla was guessed by aj; Debbie, Hejduk was guessed by Zeik;
6. International goalkeeper before 21. Rob, I allowed your Iker guess after because of SP’s spam filter issues; Shazback, Akinfeeyev was guessed by zeik; John, Lloris was guessed by alexxx
7. Yellow for removing his shirt. Ranjeet, Arjen Robben was guessed by DarthZombie, but I’ll give you a point for the fun detail that it was a second yellow. (Stupidity always scores extra with me.) AJ gets an extra point for this one, given that he gave us not one but two photos; Debbie, Ronaldo was guessed by Brett (unless, of course, you can show me photographic proof that you meant the other Ronaldo.)
8. Father and son. Lex & Ranjeet, Maldini was already guessed by Weston; alexxx, Cruyff was guessed by Rob; Iggy, Eiður Guðjohnsen was guessed by Brett
9. Retired number. zeik, as Madridista said, La Liga rules didn’t allow Sevilla to retire Puerta’s number
10. More than 110 international caps. Debbie, Beckham was guessed by Lex
11. More than six month suspension. Rob, Ferdinand was guessed by SP but again allowed due to spam filter issues. (Did you guys phone each other or what?); Zeik, Ferdinand was guessed by Rob and SP but I think you were stuck in the spam filter time warp too; Debbie, believe it or not, Zidane got only 3 matches for the headbutt. He served it through community service because he was retired.
12. All the silverware. SP, as discussed in comments, Ronaldo never got champions league medal; John, Zidane never won the league; alexxx, I think Puyol has everything but the World Cup. Zeik, I allowed Pirlo’s U-21 medal because I guess I didn’t specifically say “Grownup Euros.”
13. (Video with that song.) I didn’t doublecheck this one because there is no way I’m going to listen to this song 15 times to check up on you. If you went to the effort to look and said it was there, I took your word for it.

Thanks to everybody for playing! Here are the point totals. Bonuses are for 1) the names in the tattoos, 2) photos of the card-earning shirt removals, and 3) the YouTube videos. Plus random points tossed in occasionally for entertaining me. :-)

WHEW! Remind me to do this kind of quiz again only on a weekend when I have a lot of time to kill!!!

Laurie, I'm glad i made you laugh.

Zizou didn't win the copa italia. He never won a major domestic cup.

Also, regarding my bonus points: If I got 2 for the pictures did I also get another for the name in the tattoo?
    Sorry, I'm being greedy.
  • Jina
@ Laurie, Zizou won the Serie A with Juve. doesn't that count as league win. and he won it twice. plus Coppa Italia. he won the CL with Real Madrid. the man has won everything. oh and am surprised no one mentioned David Trezeguet for the Father/Son question. David' father was a pro player and won the WC with Argentina.
  • Shazback
After checking my Forlan answer, that was incorrect, since the rule was only used two seasons later in the Premier League. He was simply ordered off the pitch to get dressed, and not carded.

Great quiz! Can't wait for the next edition!
  • Rob
I have to applaud you for going through all that Laurie. Other than the Spamfilter issues it seemed to work well though.
  • Ranjeet, that was just the only way I could figure to keep track of scoring. I awarded you points for giving me any answer at all, then went in and did a fact check where I took that same point away if it was a duplicate. So the end result should have been the same as if the point wasn't awarded. Make sense?
  • Ranjeet
You get negatives for giving the same answer? I thought you just didnt get any pts.
  • Ps, you took a point away from alexxx but I answered larsson for the question about finishing your career in the same country, not the international goal past 35yrs. Give him a point back unless itputs him ahead of me, lol.
  • this was so much fun! I'm missing the part of my brain that helps me recognize peoples eyes so this is the first time I tried one of your quizzes. Sorry about leaving 3 different posts, but I'm with family too and the kept leaving the wifi areas, ;)
  • Madridista
Correction: Casillas has no Copa del Rey. I typed the above comment while I was looking at that Wikipedia page. Shoulda remembered 8-)
  • Madridista
In true fact-checking style (though this isn't too difficult, given my allegiances): Zidane did win a league title (La Liga in 02-03, as well as Serie A with Juventus I believe). He never won a major domestic cup (Coupe de France, Coppa Italia or Copa del Rey). Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta and Casillas have everything but the World Cup.

I discovered this page a little too late, it would have been useful (though it isn't too difficult to narrow down players with a complete set of honours): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...
It doesn't include domestic cups though.

Agh and I swear, I missed that Cannavaro was already guessed! Now you've got to do another quiz because I'm OCD and insist on getting the answers all right :)
  • SP
simon, anelka didn't win the world cup in 98, he wasnt on the squad.

who knew spam filters could be so much fun?
  • simon
I didn't see the quiz til just then, but I think I have another "won everything" player - I believe Anelka has a full set?

Oh and for number 6. No-one got Peter Jehle. Come on guys.
  • Wahoo.
