Weekend Quiz Answers: Who Did Those Tattoos Belong To?

By: Laurie | April 5th, 2009

First, if you haven’t taken our Weekend Tattoo Quiz, stop by this post and make your guesses. Then come back here for the answers.

These are always tough, but “wob” managed to get 10/13. Nicely done!

Player 1

Nery Castillo, Shakhtar Donetsk

This tattoo is apparently a picture of his parents’ wedding? (Because if I were his wife/girlfriend, that’s what I’d like to be looking at my whole life.)

Congrats to Al, first to see Nery.

Player 2

Steve Sidwell, Aston Villa

On the other hand, seeing your own marriage vows on your spouse’s back is a slightly different story. His wife’s thinking, “He’s mine, you wannabe WAGs, and I’ve got the ink to prove it!”

Congrats to JDunn, first to see Sidwell.

Player 3

Brian Ching, Houston Dynamo

I believe that would be the state of Hawaii. Anybody know what the word is?

Congrats to megs, first to see Chingy.

Player 4

Mateja Kezman, who I believe is still on loan to PSG

Some sleeve, eh?

Well done to jvk, first to see Kezman.

Player 5

Naldo, Werder Bremen

For sheer artistry, I’m going to have to make this one the pick of the litter.

Congrats to wob, first to see Naldo.

Player 6

Raul Meireles, FC Porto

This is one of many, many tattoos for Meireles. I’d show you a full body shot, but I may use them for future quizzes.

Congrats to wob, first to see Meireles

Player 7

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United

“Just enough education to perform.” It’s a musical reference, of course.

Congrats again to wob, first to see Rooney.

Player 8

Dejan Stankovic, InterMilan

As you can see, this one reads, “I belong to you Ana.” Let’s hope it lasts, or for the rest of his life he’ll be searching for another Ana. Or a Hana, Roxana, Leana, etc.

Despite this being a pretty distinctive tattoo, nobody recognized is as Stankovic’s.

Player 9

Ezequiel Lavezzi, Napoli

Nobody got Lavezzi’s Maradona tattoo! I’m shocked!

Player 10

Santino Quaranta, DC United

I believe the tattoos are something to do with being clean and sober and recommitted to both family and football. Well done, Santino!

Congrats to MLS fan megs, who got both Ching and Quaranta.

Player 11

Ricardo Quaresma, currently on loan to Chelsea

Note that the tattoo is strategically placed on the arm, so he can remember the name he’s supposed to cry out at the appropriate moment.

Kind of like Amauri.

Congrats yet again to wob, first to see Quaresma

Player 12

Paolo DiCanio, officially retired

According to one source, these are “‘fasces’ he has tattooed onto his back. An ancient symbol depicting a bundle of sticks with an axe protruding from the top, the fasces is a symbol for Italian fascism, and was used on Mussolini’s personal flag.”

Charming. So I suppose I should be glad nobody got this?

Player 13

Sergio Busquets, FC Barcelona

What does it mean?

“The phrase of the tattoo is a personal phrase and I especially dedicated the goal to my grandfather.” Spanish media claim that the meaning of the phrase is “A thing for you, the life in my country” and that it has a personal meaning known only to Busquets.

Congrats to wob, yet again as the first to see Busquets.

Hmmm, this discussion gives a whole new dimensioin to the standard "it's either your mother or me" demand.

The only one I got was Rooney! I'm blaming base-layers, as I do for the downfall of Western civilization and other things like that.
  • Okay, color me officially creeped out.
  • Fernanda's actually the name of Quaresma's mom -- let's all hope that's one name he's not crying out!
  • That's the picture I've been looking for Marcus! wooo! (no homo) lolz

HAHAHHAHAAHAHA i ruled him out after i saw the picture... http://i43.tinypic.com/oq9lxh.... i didnt show that side of his body
  • Marcus
OMG i looked at Lavezzi cause someone mentioned the gun on his waist, can't believe i didnt see it
  • And it's not really "one source" it's commonly known he's a fascist, there's that famous picture (along with multiple others) of him giving the fascist salute (http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage... And that is a fascist symbol that was used on Mussolini's Italian flag (http://www.pzg.biz/f41_fascist...
  • Ah, I knew it was Di Canio!
  • Mustafa, you have simultaneously made me laugh out loud and blush uncontrollably.

    Well done!
  • Mustafa
Yeah... I knew the Busquets one because it was written in arabic, but someone already guessed it...

...however, regarding nery castillo's, you said "Because if I were his wife/girlfriend, that’s what I’d like to be looking at my whole life.", and i must say, i think it would be much better to stare at the tattoo instead of his ridiculous unibrow (but it would still be EXTREMELY awkward to stare at the other person's mom when you're in the act...)
