Weekend Quiz Answers: Who Played for These Clubs?

Well done on your guesses. All twelve players plus current clubs were guessed by multiple people. First to guess all the players was SP, but he (or she) forgot clubs. First person to guess all players with clubs was Shazback. (We’ll give him a pass on the first name of Cristoph Metzelder.) Although the first person to guess names + clubs while getting Crostoph’s first name right was SP. So I’ll let SP and Shazback battle it out for bragging rights for winning this quiz.

I think it’s great, if you go by your knowledge rather than google/wiki. Otherwise it’s too easy.

Which is exactly the challenge of creating word-based quizzes in this day and age. Given the power of search engines, anything that involves words (rather than photos) can be easily googled. A negative. But on the positive side, word-based quizzes are more fun for people whose brains aren’t wired to do things like pick out a player’s face from his eyes. And the fact that people kept leaving guesses as the day went on rather than giving up after the first few people had left comments tells me that folks liked engaging their own brains to figure these out. And I can make these kinds of quizzes a bit more challenging by not choosing all well-known international players. (This quiz was a test — I never know how hard or easy they are till people start guessing.)

My thought: These quizzes are for fun only; it’s not like we give prizes, other than the chance to see your name on the front page of The Offside. (Not that this is not an enviable reward in and of itself, of course.) And Wikipedia and google are great tools to verify hunches and guesses; I’m sure I would use them myself, up to a point. So I’m definitely going to add this type of quiz to my list of possibilities. Just know that if you abuse the Google-Wiki option, letting the internet do ALL the work for you, you’ll have to live the rest of your life knowing that your name on our pages deserves a Mark McGwire-esque asterisk-o’-shame. Just sayin’.
