Weekend Quiz Answers: Who Were Our Bad Boys?

By: Laurie | February 22nd, 2009

Controversies and scandals and shame! Oh my!

You guys did a great job of naming our bad boys of the week. Not a one went unguessed. And you even came up with some new scandals I didn’t know/hadn’t thought about!

Congrats once again to “Eros, juve,” this week doing business as “eros miranda, juve,” for again getting the most right by coming back several times to self-correct. An amazing 10 out of 11. (Note to everyone else, though. Are we going to let him/her continue to get away with this? That’s three weeks in a row!)

Just kidding, eros miranda, juve. Well done. If I wasn’t seeing the whole pictures before I posted these, I’m not sure I could do anywhere near as well.

So who were our bad boys?

Player 1

Milan Baros, Galatasaray

I was afraid nobody was going to guess poor Milan, but fortunately our Galatasaray blogger Musab stopped by and saw one of his own. A lot of people guessed Cristiano Ronaldo (who I do see in this mouth), Guti (I can see that too) and Craig Bellamy. (Don’t see that one at all, but I’ll add him to my bad boy list.)

Milan’s scandals? I’m pretty sure there was something about going way over the speed limit (271 km/h, which translates to 168 mph) in his Ferrari, which broke the speed record for France. And then, of course, there was the time he held his nose and made a “You smell” gesture to another player, only to have it blown way out of proportion as a racist incident for which he was given a 3-match ban.

Player 2

Adrian Mutu, Fiorentina

That pesky cocaine thing in England, followed by that pesky multi-million pound fine. Congrats to “Eros miranda, juve” for seeing Mutu in this picture.

Player 3

Fabien Barthez, retired

For the Barthez scandal, nobody listed, “Was chosen over Coupet in WC 2006.” I’m shocked that you let that one slide by.

Eros Miranda, juve” saw Barthez and listed the match fixing scandal. I had forgotten he was at Marseille in those days, plus I tend not to hold the players responsible for these things without proof. So I was thinking more of the bans for spitting at the referee and recreational cannabis use.

(P.S. I love Barthez.)

Player 4

Sidney Govou, Lyon

A recent scandal, this. First correct guess was from Matt, who expressed it this way:

4. looks like sid govou and he looks like he’s floating cause he’s had too much to drink…and he looks like he’s gonna drive a car too.

Player 5

Marco Borriello

Ah, Marco. What kind of brains does it take to ingest the medication your girlfriend is taking for a…um…personal infection? Medication which then causes you to test positive for steroids?

(Irrelevant note here: A certain blogger for this site who shall remain nameless told me, “You know, that Borriello story was the reason I first found The Offside.” And this is a guy who says that the thought of MY search history gives him the willies? Please.)

Congrats to Bonnie, first to see Marco.

Player 6

Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United

Rio was definitely a bad boy before he grew up and settled down, wasn’t he? From our first guesser Bonnie:

#6-Rio Ferdinand – been caught drinking and driving, involved with a sex-taping scandal, and of coarse, was banned for failing to take a drug test.

I kind of miss Bad Rio. Is that wrong?

Player 7

Artur Boruc, Celtic

For Artur’s list of transgressions, let’s go to Gregorio from Artur’s native land, Poland.

so let’s begin with boruc – the pic nr 7
- the glasgow derby scandals: showing the finger to rangers’ fans and waving celtic championship flag in front of them; refusing to shake hands with b. ferguson after the game; the shirt with the pope
- drinking scandals: the incident after poland-ukraine game, after he was suspended for two games by leo beenhakker; another one when in club, artur got 50grand fine
- recently, beating up mcgeady
- way too many blunders in the last few months
still, all the best to the holy goalie!

Player 8

Jon Conway, New York Red Bulls

I had to dig deep for an MLS bad boy. Our boys just don’t have the $$$ to get into serious trouble. Plust most of them are college grads. Not sure if this makes them smarter, but it definitely makes them older, and thus less prone to mischief.

And so I had to turn to the hapless, inadvertent bad boy, Jon Conway, who accidentally took a legal supplement that contained banned substances. And, to add insult to injury, he was replaced during his ten-match ban by the adorable Danny Cepero, who not only scored a goal from the 25-yard line, he also took the Red Bulls all the way to the MLS Cup final.

Ouch. (I’m guessing next time Jon will check the ingredients list.)

Congrats to George, first to see our MLS bad boy.

Player 9

Eric Cantona, retired

How bad is Cantona? We could start a list. Or we could just show this video and allow your imaginations to take it from there.

Joga Bonito indeed!

Well done Matt, first to see Cantona.

Player 10

Stan Collymore, retired

Congrats to Bonnie, first to see Collymore, who could be one of the poster boys for “Bad Boy Football Players.” Wife beating and dogging, anyone?

(Not sure what “dogging” is? Feel free to google it. The British tabloids will tell you FAR more than you ever wanted to know.)

Well done, everyone. Tune in next week for Bad Boys, Part II.

Once your a CimBomlu, your family. Just like how a mother can tell apart her twin sons, a CimBomlu can spot his players from their armpits.

Darn. I could have sworn that Collymore eyes-close up was Adriano.

And Laurie, try Google-searching “Barthez scandale” (with an E) and see what first result you get.

I personally find it offending that the “new Rio”s worst actions are making a horrible Punked rip-off. Please, just go back to the fun-to-hate bad-boy, I could at least understand his actions.
