Weekend Quiz Answers: Who Were Our Loyal Players?

By: Laurie | April 26th, 2009

First things, if you haven’t yet taken this quiz, stop by this post and make your guesses. Then come back here for the answers.

And Mexico fans, I tried to include a Mexican player. I really did. But I think my computer must be party to the whole US-Mexico rivalry thing, because it refused to pull up either of the Oswaldo Sanchez photos I picked. Seriously.

Well done again with the guesses; 10/11 were seen by at least one person. Wayne Farry was our top guesser with 7/11. Well done!

Player 1

Jerome Rothen, French Ligue(s)

And of course Chubby had to point out that Rothen did a stint in Monaco, which is techincally not France. To which I would say, “But they do play in the French League” (smartass.) ;-)

Congrats to first guesser: Wayne Farry.

bonus photo, which came with the heading “Rothen et cheval.” (Rothen and horse. Because you couldn’t figure that out yourself.) And no, I have no idea.

Player 2

Joleon Lescott, England

First, Wolverhampton, now Everton, in the Premier League at last. (Although if he’d stuck with Wolves, he would be next year anyway.)

Congrats to first guesser: Migz

Player 3

Jérémy Toulalan, France

Congrats to first guesser: Philip

Not sure Toulalan will stay in Ligue 1, but he has done well there so far.

Player 4

Gianluigi Buffon, Italy

Congrats to first guesser: Wayne Farry

Player 5

Frank Lampard, England

I knew Lampard would be obvious, so I thought I’d mix things up a bit with this adorable old photo from his West Ham days.

Congrats to first guesser: Wayne Farry

Player 6

Ben Olsen, US

Olsen’s only stint away from DC United came with a loan to Nottingham Forest, where he got a badly-injured ankle for his troubles. Since then it’s been DCU all the way.

Congrats to first guesser: Johnny

Player 7

Hatem ben Arfa, France

My guess is that Hatem is one of those who is loyal only because he hasn’t yet been given the opportunity not to be. But I could be wrong.

Congrats to first guesser: Migz

Player 8

Arda Turan, Turkey

I thought one of our Turkish bloggers might stop by to identify Arda, but it didn’t happen. Nobody guessed Turan.

Player 9

Francesco Totti, Italy (Roma)

No Totti, no party. At least in Rome. Romanista since 1989. (That’s twenty freakin’ years, in case you hadn’t done the math.)

Congrats to first guesser: Michele

Player 10

Sergio Ramos, Spain

C’mon, people. I’ve done plenty of mouth cuts before and nobody’s ever had issues. What was it about this one that made you not want to guess? Are Sergio’s lips just too damn sexy or something? (Hee.)

Ramos was finally guessed by first guesser Madridista, who wants to be sure we all know that the person who finally got this one is not a guy. (I guess that being female makes it okay to identify these lips?)

Player 11

Ryan Giggs, England

Giggs has Totti beat: Manchester United since 1987. (Although as he youth he did dally with the enemy, Man City, for a short while.) Since Giggsy was another obvious one, I picked this photo to liven things up. (Nice hair, Giggs!)

Congrats to first guesser: Migz

And another one, just for fun:

laurie, where are the promised maldini pics??
  • Johnny
I kept seeing Jon Herder's face attached to that mouth. Couldn't help it.

    Apologies Sergio.
  • Ryan
    #1 had me fooled
I thought it was Rod Stewart...
  • Madridista
Hmm. Did my comment go missing?
  • Madridista
Heh. I was responding to the comment that "fingers will be pointed at the guy that discovers the lip man". Being female makes it slightly more acceptable. Slightly.

On the other hand, I agree with you; there aren't many players with distinctive lips. Once I guessed it was Ramos it was impossible not to see his entire face in it.

Though the colour in the picture is strange. He looks like a vampire.
  • No worries, Chubby. As I was researching this the geographical part of my brain was on vacation, and I actually forgot that Monaco is not technically part of France! So I think that makes us even. :-D
  • And England..
  • Utku
bah, i looked through this looking for hakan sukur until i remembered he had a stint in Italy.
  • Chubby
My bad Laurie, I was thinking one club, and since Totti, Giggs and Maldini were mentioned I, wrongly, assumed that Rothen should not be in the list, although Monaco being a separate political entity should have crossed my mind. It didn't. Kudos to you.
  • Weston, I'm the exact opposite of you. Can guess these fairly well but cannot predict any scores!
  • man i really wish i was good at this, i can predict scores but i cant identify players by their eyes (or lips) to save my life!

ps, that picture of rothem is hilarious because i can only imagine what he is thinking...
  • Woo! I won, great stuff...
