Weekend Quiz Answers: Who Were Those Defenders?

By: Laurie | February 1st, 2009

If you haven’t taken our Weekend Defenders Quiz, stop by this post and make your guesses, then come back here for the answers.

This was even tougher than I thought! Nobody got all of them, and some of them were too tough for everybody. (But there were some great guesses — my favorite being Dog the Bounty Hunter for #3.)

Defender 1

Philippe Mexès, AS Roma

Every time I do an image search for Philou, this picture is somewhere at the top. I think it captures his essence. Congrats to Mike for getting it first.

Defender 2

Taye Taiwo, Olympique de Marseille

I was glad to see “Marcus R4E” finally get this one last night. Taiwo is one of my favorite reasons to watch Marseille this year and I like to see him get a little recognition.

Defender 3

Frankie Hejduk, Columbus Crew

Congratulations “Micronesia Justin” for seeing Frankie. (But the shades do look like something Sergio Ramos would do, don’t they? Or Dog the Bounty Hunter, for that matter.) Also, while I was searching for the Quiz photo, I found this other Hejduk photo I thought fans might enjoy.

Defender 4

Joan Capdevila, Villareal

What’s funny is that people guessed #6 as Capdevila due to the similar hair, but nobody guessed that he was this photo — #4. One of those semi-invisible defenders?

Defender 5

Lúcio, Bayern Munich

Congrats to KG, first to see Lúcio in this photo.

Defender 6

Benoît Trémoulinas, Girondins de Bordeaux

I knew people would have a hard time with Trémoulinas, because I don’t think he’s all that well-known outside of France. But mark my words, he will be! He’s a speedy little leftback who’s drawn comparisons to Bixente Lizarazu.

Defender 7

Marco Materazzi, InterMilan

Congrats, Johonna, for being first to guess right. And if you’re an Italy fan and guessed wrong you’re probably kicking yourself, because chances are you’ve seen this photo before. It’s iconic.

Defender 8

Pepe, Real Madrid

Congrats to Gregorio, first to see Pepe.

Defender 9

Christoph Metzelder, man of mystery,
Real Madrid

Juliet was first to get this one right. (How did I know the best guess would belong to a female?)

Defender 10

Kolo Touré, Arsenal

Congrats to Matt, first to see Touré. And the most interesting guess award goes to Mike. Before he guessed, Patrice Evra, I never would have said Evra and Toure looked alike. But in the top eyes photo they do, don’t they?

Well done, guys. Check back next weekend for more.

Yeah, this was a really tough one. I feel proud of myself for guessing Mexes first though, and I feel popular being mentioned 3 times in one post! :P

I knew #10 was a Toure, I have seen that face so many times in the Barca shirt! I just didn’t think of Kolo.

I’m embarassed to have missed Lucio, but there was no way Metze was getting past me.
