Weekend Quiz Answers: Who Were Those Legends?
By: Laurie | October 5th, 2008First, if you haven’t yet done our Weekend Quiz, stop by this post to see if you can identify our players.
So who were the international legends in my quiz? Every one of them was guessed by someone among our readership, but all of them were not guessed by any one person.
I think this has to do with national loyalties — most of us know one, or a few countries, but few of us know them all. (I had to hit Daryl and Chris up for Charlton, Cruyff and Baggio. Left to my own devices I would have picked Beckham, Van Basten and Maldini.)
Legend #1
Diego Maradona, Argentina.
The eyes were everything here, weren’t they? Maradona looked entirely like Maradona to me, even with just a portion of his face revealed.
Legend #2
Sir Bobby Charlton, England.
1958-1970. Remember that England World Cup victory, 1966? Yeah, that Bobby Charlton.
Legend #3
Roberto Baggio, Italy
FIFA World Player of the Year, 1993
Legend #4
Zinedine Zidane, France
What? Of course I didn’t create a quiz just so I could include a picture of Zidane.
Legend #5
Johan Cruyff, Netherlands
Who else could become an international legend with only 48 caps?
Legend #6
Cobi Jones, USA
As Alex said in the comments: I think #6 is Cobi Jones. He definitely fits Laurie’s definition of ‘legend’ (164 caps and arguably the face of the US team’s rise to respectability in the 90s).
Legend #7
Pele, Brazil
Who else?
Legend #8
Franz Beckenbauer, Germany
These eyes did not say “Beckenbauer” to me, but some of you got it. Impressive!

I really didn’t get the last was Der Kaiser, even though I’ve seen that photo a million times. Amazing.

Rob, I know. I’m the same way. And yet the Maradona eyes define the face entirely — you don’t need any other feature to know it’s Maradona. Isn’t it interesting how the brain identifies things?

what’s interesting is how cobi jones is in the same list of “legends” as pele, maradona, and zidane.

Finnegan, I knew that would be controversial. But again, think about where US soccer was before Cobi vs. after. As Alex said, he was the face of the team’s rise to respectability.
