Weekend Quiz Answers: Who’s Gunning for Those Titles?

By: Laurie | April 19th, 2009

First, if you haven’t yet taken our quiz, stop by this post and make your guesses, then come back here for the answers.

You guys did really well on this one — 11/12 were correctly guessed. And not coincidentally, that was also the total score of our top guesser, Harvey, with honorable mentions to Wayne Farry, eros miranda, juve and Stephanie for lots of early correct guesses. Well done!

So who were our title challengers?

Player 1

Lorik Cana, Olympique de Marseille

Marseille cemented their spot at the top of Ligue 1 this weekend with a victory over Lorient coupled with a Lyon loss to Bordeaux. Is the era of Lyon dominance drawing to a close?

And if you’re a fan of my favorite pugilist Cana and want a smile, go to this video, at about the 7:15 mark, and you’ll see him attempting to throttle a guy who was trying to prevent him from taking a throw-in. I love Lorik Cana.

Congratulations to Mallymoodle, first to see Cana.

Player 2

Nicolas Anelka, Chelsea

Yes, Chelsea still has a shot at the Premier League title.

And…gosh. One of my favorite French players. How did he end up in my quiz?

Congrats to Wayne, first to see Anelka

Player 3

Javier Zanetti, InterMilan

I included only one Serie A player, because Inter pretty much has the title in the bag. (I also found it interesting that some of you saw Ibrahimovic’s nose in that shot. Must be the photo cut? Maybe his cheek looks like part of his nose?)

Wayne was also first to see Zanetti.

Player 4

Kris Boyd, Rangers

The race for the Scottish Premier League title is a tight one. Celtic at 74 points, hated rivals Rangers at 73. Next on the list? Hearts at 54. Definitely a nail-biter of a two-horse race.

And Wayne was also first to see Kris Boyd. (I’m seeing a pattern here.)

Player 5

Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United

No, it’s not Eric Abidal. (Although anyone who knows my quizzes can be forgiven for guessing a Frenchman.) But this one is Ferdinand of ManU, a club who are holding onto the top of the table for dear life.

Well done Mat, first to see Rio.

Player 6

Karim Benzema, Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon)

Lyon are struggling to find their form again after being displaced at the top of the table for the first time in ages.

And Wayne was the first to see Benzema

Player 7

Gary Caldwell, Celtic

Okay, Scotland fans, is this or is it not Gary Caldwell? I always get paranoid when nobody guesses popular international players, particularly those I probably wouldn’t recognize on the street. I know this is not a great picture, but there are similarities to this one. So it really is him. Right?

(Next time you guys need to guess these to keep me from getting paranoid. Just sayin’.)

And no, it’s not Hleb, although now that you mention it I can see similarities. (But well done to Johnny for pointing out that it wasn’t him.)

Player 8

Oguchi Onyewu, Standard Liege

Aaron, you’re absolutely right that I couldn’t figure out a way to include my standard token MLS player. But I did manage a USMNT guy. Close enough?

Onyewu plays for Standard Liege in the Belgian league.

And the second photo is just a bonus.

Pat on the back to Greg, first to see Gooch.

Player 9

Dirk Kuyt, Liverpool

Liverpool is one of the teams that’s managed to make the title race in the Prem interesting.

Well done to Stephanie, first to see Kuyt.

And most interesting guess of the week has to go to Harvey, who correctly saw Kuyt, then second-guessed himself with Francesco Totti.

Hmm… Maybe if I squint and unfocus my eyes and use my crayons to draw in eyebrows…

Player 10

Yoann Gourcuff, FC Girondins de Bordeaux

I wondered how small I’d have to make to cut to keep people from seeing Gourcuff. The answer is apparently “smaller than I did.”

Bordeaux beat Lyon today and slipped up into second in the league behind Marseille, dropping Lyon to third. Shock!

(And how in the world did another of my favorite Ligue 1 players make it into this quiz? I hate when that happens. )

Wayne was also first to see Gourcuff.

Player 11

Samuel Eto’o, Barcelona

Eto’o was my only La Liga representative because I couldn’t quite decide how realistic Real Madrid’s chances are. Forgive me, RM fans.

And Wayne was also first to see Eto’o.

Player 12

Massimo Oddo, Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich may be sitting in second and playing inconsistently, but true believers still have faith.

And Wayne was also first to see Oddo.

Nice job with the guesses this week. Check back next week for more Weekend Quiz excitement.

No one got Caldwell because they couldn’t see his gigantic foreheid. You could land a plane on that thing. The guy’s got a pumpkin on top of his neck. HEID HEID HEID HEID!

Oh and the reason i thought 3 was ibra was the eyes, not the nose. They look very ibraish to me. Also, have any of you who guessed 5 was Abidal ever seen a picture of him? i see no resemblance whatsoever.

Pssh, I’d recognize Gourcuff’s eyes no matter how small they were. Great game. It was fun!

You can’t put eyes as distinctive as Lashes Gourcuff’s up and not expect people to figure it out! His ass, maybe…

    And Lorik Cana *thumbs up*
