Weekend Quiz Scoring/Answers
By: Laurie | July 23rd, 2009
If you haven’t taken our Weekend Quiz, stop by this post and make your best guesses, then stop back by here.
Apologies for the delay in announcing our “medalists.” I got distracted by all the other exciting footy stuff going on. (No. Really.) Also, on a related topic, we’re switching the Weekend Quiz to once a month to allow my creative juices to build back up. Stay tuned for the August quiz, last weekend of the month.
And here’s my attempt at grading our last Weekend Quiz. (These are always tough!) As I said in the last quiz of this type, I didn’t make much attempt to verify your answers — if you said a player qualified, I agreed with you unless I automatically knew differently. (And I’ll be honest: These particular questions mostly require research, so there weren’t many of those “automatically knew” answers for me. If you said it was a derby, it was a derby.)
Also, I was “grading” these while also watching the Mexico-Costa Rica Gold Cup game, so if I’ve messed up, forgive me.
Gold medal: MAD, for not only answering 9/10 but for getting extra credit for going with only one club (that gets extra points) AND extra for multiple answers for #5 and #6. Total points = approximately 1gazillion+9.
(Did I mention I reserve the right to award random points for things that amuse/impress me?)
Smartass Award (+ Gold Medal +++) to: Shazback, who actually wrote the quiz, emailed it to me, then posted pretty much the same answers in the comments that he sent me as examples. I should probably give him multiple extra points for posting extra answers, but… No. I’ll just stick with “Smartass” and leave it at that.
(Thanks, Shazback, for doing my work for me.)
Silver medals:
Shreyas: 14 points
Phantompong: 13 points
(Oh, did I also mention I can award multiple medals at random for different point totals? Yes, I can do that too.)
Bronze medals
Andersen: 12 points
Rob: 11 points
Well done to everybody and thanks for playing! Point totals and lists of duplicate answers are below.
Rob 9 answered – (I think your Seedorf guess on #2 is right. I’m counting four domestic cups and FIVE(!!!) Champions League? Is that right?) Also + 2 for extra answers on #6 = 11
Utku 10 answered – 1 duplicate = 9
John 8 answered = 8
Phantompong 9 answered + 4 for all the Aragones stuff = 13
Brad 10 answered – 3 for duplicate +1 for extra on #6 = 8
Andersen 9 answered + 3 for #6 = 12
vic 7 answered -1 for duplicate = 6
Amanda 6 answered -2 for duplicate + 3 on #6 = 7
Ian 4 answered = 4
Weston 7 answered -1 for Higuain, but + 1 for Pauleta, because you asked so nicely = 7
Shreyas 10 answered, – 2 duplicate + 6(?) for Basile on #6, since he’s coached pretty much every team in the world multiple times = 14
MAD 9 answered, -1 for duplicate + 1 for all one team, + a gazillion for extra answers = 1 gazillion+9 or so Gold for you!
k 1 answered = 1
Shazback 10+ answered = 10+
Question 1 Has won the top division league in two (or more) different countries. Brad, Beckham was guessed by John;
Question 2 Has won more Continental cups than Domestic leagues Amanda, Carragher was guessed by Andersen
Question 3 Has never played professionally in the country he was born in (the UK counts as one country). Amanda, alas, Rossi was also guessed by Andersen. (I think he was peeking over your shoulder. Or vice versa.)
Question 4 Has played in two (or more) major derbies (i.e. Boca-River, Glasgow-Rangers, Barca-Real, Fener-Gala, Fla-Flu…). Brad, Ronaldinho was guessed by John; Weston, Higuain was guessed by Phantompong;
Question 5 Has played on both sides in one (or more) major derbies. (Extra point if you can name a player who has played both sides in more than one derby.) Shreyas, Kenny Miller was guessed by Ian.
Question 6 Has managed the same club or country on two (or more) different occasions. (Extra point for each over two.) Weston, I gave you Lippi because it was overlap. And because you asked. (Sometimes that’s all it takes, people.)
Question 7 Has been second in the top-division league in three (or more) different countries.
Question 8 Has been the top goalscorer in the top division of the same country ten seasons (or more) after being the top goalscorer for the first time.
Question 9 Has won a major international club trophy ten years (or more) after winning it the first time. Utku, Rob had already guessed Maldini; MAD, phantompong had already guessed Seedorf
Question 10 Has won a major international trophy (club or country) before turning 21 and after turning 35. Brad, vic and Shreyas, Maldini guessed by Rob

My answer to question ten was wrong. Bergomi was only 34 – if I did the math right, this time – when he won the UEFA Cup, so if that losses me some points, I’ll accept with good grace.

That look like it took some working out! Good stuff though, always fun.
(What are we going to do at weekends with only a monthly quiz!?)
