Weekend Quiz: Who Were Those EPL Escapees?
By: Laurie | February 15th, 2009First, if you haven’t yet taken our Weekend Quiz on players who have excaped from the EPL, stop by this post and make your guesses. Then come back here for the answers.
Congrats again to reader “eros, juve,” who both made the most correct guesses (10/11) and exhibited the most tenacity — coming back a couple of tiems to self-correct and build on his previous guesses.
So who were these EPL escapees?

Player 1

Juan Pablo Angel, New York Red Bulls
Congrats to Ranjeet, first to see Angel. (And a Good Guess Award to Marco, who saw a resemblance to Hernan Crespo. I completely forgot about Crespo, who also deserved to be in this quiz.)

Player 2

Andriy Voronin, Hertha Berlin
This was a hard one, finally guessed by “eros, juve” after I left a couploe of hints. It could be because Voronin is technically only on loan to Hertha Berlin, or it could be because with Voronin, it’s all in the hair, isn’t it? I’m also guessing that the fact that he scored a brace yesterday after the quiz was posted may have put him back into people’s minds.
Most interesting guess goes to Matt, who guessed Freddie Ljungberg. (How did I forget to include Freddie in this quiz? So much for these being all about me, eh?)

Player 3

Claude Makelele, Paris St. Germain
If you watched Chelsea much at all over the past few years, you’ve seen this smile. (Usually as he’s shaking his head while disagreeing with a ref, right?) Plus if you know me and my quizzes, you knew that Claude would be in here. Congrats to “eros, juve” for being first to name him.

Player 4

Gabriel Heinze, Real Madrid
Technically Heinze could probably be called an escapee from pretty much everywhere. He’s played in Argentina, Spain, Portugal, France, England, and now Spain again. Congrats to Rob, first to see the man with the lovely locks.

Player 5

Carlos Bocanegra, Stade Rennais (Rennes)
As if I could leave out an American playing in France. Congrats to Alex, first to see Boca.

Player 6

Darren Huckerby, San Jose Earthquakes
Yes, the original photo (on the left) is kind of odd in its coloring, which maybe explains why nobody had guessed Huckerby, even after I added the entirely different second photo.

Player 7

Mathieu Flamini, AC Milan
Again, I’ve got to make this as French as possible. Congrats to Mike, first to see Flamini.
Most interesting guess? Thomas, with “Felix Gaeta.” (How much do I love people who throw in obscure and mildly nerdy references here? A lot. That’s how much. And as someone who comes from a long line of the mildly nerdy, I mean that in the most complimentary possible way.)

Player 8

Andriy Shevchenko, AC Milan
Congrats to Mike again, the first to see Shevchenko.

Player 9

Arjen Robben
I think this was the easiest one, wasn’t it? Congrats to Mike, again first to guess.

Player 10

Gerard Piqué, FC Barcelona
Again, “eros, juve” was first to spot the boy with the tall hair.

Player 11

Thierry Henry, FC Barcelona
As Rob said, Mr. Va-va-voom himself. (Go ahead. Click on the link. It’s adorable.)

Laurie I gotta say I like the way you do the answers now a lot more than before.
I’m kicking myself now for not recognizing most of the rest of those faces earlier.Posted from

Whoever was the one that guessed “Felix Gaeta” for Flamini had my deepest respect. Simply marvelous. (And not a half bad guess, either.)

LOL, thanks for the shout out Laurie! And the deep respect Hana, right back at you. So say we all!
I threw together a little side by side comparison of your pic and a screenshot of one of poor Gaeta’s last moments: http://tinyurl.com/FlaminiVsFelix

Most interesting guess? Thomas, with “Felix Gaeta.”
For frak’s sake they’re twins separated at birth! Why didn’t I see that? Genius Thomas.
