Weekend Watch: A Careful Balancing Act
By: Bob | June 15th, 2007
It is a Father’s Day weekend and the kind people who make a living playing football in Spain are offering us all a treat. There is a fierce battle at both the top and the bottom of La Liga table which should make this Sunday a memorable one if we all don’t drink too much and end up in a drunken stupor with hazy memories wondering how our spleens got bruised. There are some other games happening as well that are kind of/sort of worth keeping an eye on although frankly the schedule is light this time of year.
Saturday
Colo Colo v Palestino - There are two games left in the Apertura in Chile and things are tight at the top. Defending champions Colo Colo are a point clear of Universidad Catolica and three points clear of Audax Italiano. They’ll look to increase their lead against a mid-table Palestino side.
Lyn Oslo v SK Brann - A look at the top of the table in Norway shows that the club from Bergen, SK Brann, ia ruling the roost. Among the players on their roster is an American defender named Ramiro Corrales who spent time with a bunch of teams in MLS and probably can help translate signs directed at Lyn Oslo.
New York Red Bull v Kansas City - One of these teams will emerge as the leader in the Eastern Conference after they battle in front of the masses at Giants Stadium. Actually, if they tie, the New England Revolution could end up in first place, but that doesn’t sound as dramatic as saying one of these teams will emerge as the leader in the Eastern Conferenceā¦
Sunday
FC Sevilla v Villarreal - Hot damn if the final week of La Liga isn’t your idea of excitement you need to reevaluate your life or at least your reason for visiting The Offside. Real Madrid have 73 points and is at home to Mallorca. Barcelona also have 73 points and is on the road against Gimnastic de Tarragona. Sevilla have 71 points and play host to Villarreal. I have the feeling that something crazy is going to happen during these games. Can’t wait.
Valencia v Real Sociedad - Before we know who will win the league title in Spain, we’ll know who has been relegated. The games featuring teams fighting relegation are happening earlier in the day in Spain. It is a mixed up, jumbled up mess at the bottom of the table with Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo, Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis all within three points of one another. Real Sociedad might have the toughest road to safety having to take on Valencia on the road while also hoping the teams ahead of them stumble.
Orebro SK v Brommapojkarna - Your Wikipedia fact of the week: “Brommapojkarna is the largest football club in Europe in terms of the number of active teams of all ages (in 2007 there were 247 teams and 3,000 players in different series).” Size doesn’t seem to matter though as they are in last place in Sweden. Today they take on the team that is one place in front of them.
MyPa v FC Inter - Nice guys finish last. FC Inter must be full of nice guys since they are at the bottom looking up in Finland. Today they take on MyPa. Little did he know that he would be playing soccer on Father’s Day. Go get them, dad!
