Weekend Watch: An Entire Season Comes Down to 90 Minutes
By: Bob | October 13th, 2006
Forget playing for love of country, the big leagues are back in action this weekend and it is all about pride of club and picking up another paycheck. Here are some matches you should keep an eye on while you get your weekend groove on.
Saturday
New York Red Bull vs. Kansas City – The last weekend of the MLS regular season will determine who is in the playoffs and who gets to stay home and watch American Idol. Even if you went Rip Van Winkle during the season you can catch the games that matter this weekend including this one in New York where the Wizards need a draw to make the playoffs and the Red Bull need a win.
Walsall vs. Wycombe – First place in English League Two is on the line as the current table toppers Walsall play host to second place Wycombe.
Danubio F.C. vs. River Plate – Not sure why a team in Uruguay is named after a river in Europe but such is the case with Danubio FC, who take on a team that shares a name with an Argentine side. I think this is happening in Uruguay and not Paraguay. This is all so very confusing.
Newcastle Jets vs. New Zealand Knights – Like their namesake in England, Newcastle is struggling this year and look to move out of last place in Australia’s A-League with a win against equally hapless New Zealand. Anyone know if the Knights perform the Haka before they play? Can’t get enough of tha Haka.
Sunday
Hibernian vs. Hearts – Despite having an owner who should be sedated in a mental institution, Hearts is having a good year so far. They’re in second place in the SPL and will look to get healthy against Hibs.
Barcelona vs. FC Sevilla – This is an absolutely monster week for Barcelona starting with a clash against La Liga contenders Sevilla, followed by a Champions League tilt against Chelsea and ending with El Clásico against Real Madrid. In between matches, they’ll be asked to cure cancer, fight crime and teach me how to spell. That last task might be their most difficult.
Quilmes vs. Lanús – Last place Quilmes has the pleasure of welcoming in the charming folks from Lanus. They would be well advised not to say anything too mean to their guests.
