Weekend Watch: Armageddon in the Premiership

By: Bob | January 19th, 2007

crosseyed.jpgEverybody’s working for the weekend. It is true. I just coined that phrase. The reason we all toil away during the week is so that on the weekend we can emulate a sloth by sitting on a couch watching football and, well, watch more football. Undoubtedly you have your own rooting interests, but here are some games that you should keep an eye on while you don’t move for 48 hours straight.

Saturday

Liverpool vs. Chelsea – The Premiership has largely bored the snot out of me this year but that could change this weekend when the league’s top four teams all get together for a little square dance. It would take a minor miracle for Liverpool to catch up to Manchester United, who play against Arsenal on Sunday, but I am sure they would enjoy nothing more than to make life miserable for second place Chelsea.

United States vs. Denmark - It is the start of the Bob Bradley era for the U.S as they take on a collection of Danish players no one has ever heard of in an international friendly in sunny California.

Chivas vs.Toluca - If it doesn’t seem very long ago that Chivas won the championship in Mexico that is because it wasn’t very long ago. There is no rest for the weary, however, as the Mexican Clausura season kicks off with a full slate of matches.

Peterhead vs. Stranraer - Last year at this time Stranraer were fighting to stay up in the Scottish Premier League. This year at this time Stranraer are fighting to stay up in Scottish Division Two. Next year at this time Stranraer very well could be fighting to stay up in Scottish Division Three.

Sunday

Karlsruhe vs. SV Wacker Burghausen – Quick, who is on top of the Bundesliga 2 table? If you answered Karlsruhe give yourself a pat on the back. Their lead is but a mere point over Hansa Rostock and today they hope to get some breathing room by picking up three points against relegation zone SV Wacker Burghausen.

Ecuador vs. Sweden - Like their pals from Denmark, Sweden are heading to warmer lands in search of football pitches that aren’t covered by piles of snow. Henrik Larssen and Freddie Ljunberg will likely not play for Sweden as they have to take part in that little tilt between Manchester United and Arsenal today.

Bragantino vs. Juventus - Not only were Juventus punished into playing in Serie B but not they apparently have to take part in Brazil’s Paulista season as well.

I GUESSED KARLSRUHE FC! but then again I’m probably the only person here who has a rooting interest in the game.

    Go 1860 Munich!
