Weekend Watch: Can Keith do it?
By: Bob | November 17th, 2006
It is a great time to be alive and to be a football fan. While your favorite team is battling it out this weekend, here are some noteworthy matches that are worth keeping an eye on….
Saturday
Edinburgh University vs. Keith – The world waits with baited breath for the Scottish Cup Round 1. The premier match, at least in my mind, involves the crazy kids from Edinburgh University taking on Keith. Seems a bit unfair for 11 players to play against one guy, but maybe this Keith character is something special.
Sporting Gijon vs. Hercules - Roman mythology buffs know Hercules as being the son of Jupiter and grandson of Theseus. Spanish Second Division fans know Hercules as being the team currently residing in tenth place.
Bay United vs. City Pillars – A clash between Mvela Golden League teams in South Africa. City Pillars finished second in the league last season but are off a slow start in this year’s campaign. In 2004-05, there actually was a team in the league called the Dangerous Darkies, but they couldn’t avoid relegation.
Sunday
Sao Paulo vs. Atletico Paranaense – With a win at home, Sao Paolo can clinch their fourth Brazilian title to go along with last year’s Libertadores Cup and World Club championship titles.
Ankaraspor vs. Gaziantepspor – Italian goalkeeping great Walter Zenga is the new boss at Gaziantepspor this season and he has his much improved side in 10th place in the 18-team Turkish premier league.
Toluca vs. Chiapas – It has been a busy week for the Mexican club Toluca. On Thursday, they played two matches on two continents due to a clash of fixtures. Unfortunately for Toluca fans, they lost both the Copa Sudamericana tie away to Chile’s Colo Colo and also the first leg of a Mexican championship playoff tie at Chiapas. They’ll look for revenge at home against Chiapas on Sunday
