Weekend Watch: Friend or Foe?
By: Bob | November 2nd, 2007
Are you a fan of watching grown men who wear shorts and kick a ball? Are your eyes happy watching a television screen in 90-minute segments? If you answered yes to both these questions, you’ll want to check out some of the action that is on tap this weekend. If you answered no, you might want to consider refining your Google search and finding another site. Your somewhat randomly selected games of the weekend after the jump.
Saturday
Arsenal v Manchester United – The English Premier League title won’t be decided this weekend, but the winner of this one could have the upper hand in the race. Arsenal have not tasted defeat through ten league games. Manchester United have only lost once and they enter the game having scored four goals in each of their past four games. Should be a doozy.
Sevilla v Real Madrid – Real Madrid looked stunningly good in their midweek drubbing of Valencia. They hit the road to face a Sevilla side that is trying to sort itself out after the departure of manager Juande Ramos.
New England v New York – The Red Bulls were the only home playoff side not to come away with an advantage after the first leg. Now they travel up the freeway to New England needing a result on the road. There’s been lots of scuttlebutt about Bruce Arena having to win this one to keep his job. I think that is absurd.
Strasbourg v PSG – With only two league wins to their name, I think it is safe to say that PSG are officially struggling. The once mighty giants are all the way down in 15th place and they are looking up at teams like Strasbourg, who are in sixth place after gaining promotion last season.
Heerenveen v PSV Eindhoven – PSV are undefeated through nine games, but that was with Ronald Koeman at the helm. He has jumped ship to Valencia so all eyes will be on the Dutch leaders to see how they play under interim boss Jan Wouters. They face a mid-table Heerenveen side.
Hamburg SV v Hertha Berlin – The way that things are shaping up in the Bundesliga Hamburg might be the only side that can keep Bayern Munich from running away with the title. They haven’t lost in ten matches and will try to make it eleven against a Hertha Berlin team that was booted out of the German Cup by a minnow.
Sunday
Juventus v Inter Milan – These two clubs haven’t met for a couple of seasons, but nothing has really changed. Both are near the top of the table and both sides still dislike one another. Point fixing, relegation, etc…who cares? This one should be fun.
Hibernian v Hearts – It is derby day in Edinburgh with fourth-place Hibs hosting a Hearts team that has struggled in league play but is coming off a cup victory over Celtic. It isn’t The Old Firm, but when these two clubs meet it is usually a good time.
Juventude v São Paulo – With a championship trophy already in the trophy case, São Paulo will spend the final few weeks of the season in Brazil doing a victory lap.

The Edinburgh derby is a great time. Hibs were the hot team early, and now Hearts have got to be confident after blanking Celtic. As a solid and consistent Vlad Romanov hater, I have to side with the Hibees. Plus I blame the stupid Hearts-like maroon jersey that Scotland wore in Georgia for the Euro 2008 loss there. Bastards.

Kansas City @ Chivas on Saturday. I’ll be parked at the bar for this one because it will take lots and lots of alcohol to get through. I expect if Chivas don’t come out and score early in the match, its gonna drag out to penalties. I honestly don’t think Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsey Lohan could come up with the potential drama in this game.

This Saturday Turkey’s second and third best teams square off in a great Istanbul Derby!! Fenerbahce VS Besiktas!!! League leaders Galatasaray are five points ahead of them so both teams MUST win.

Hearts are going to want to punish someone for that Scottish Cup draw that belatedly stuck them with Rangers. Not that they’ll need any extra motivation on Sunday.

Wait, that was the CIS Insurance Cup, wasn’t it? In the brain cells:football cups ratio, I’m working on a deficit.
