Weekend Watch: Go Ahead and Smile
By: Bob | March 9th, 2007
The Old Firm in Scotland, the Milan Derby in Italy, the FA Cup in England and El Clasico in Spain…not a bad weekend football lineup. While you are watching those matches and following your favorite teams, here are some other randomly selected games to keep an eye on.
Saturday
FC Zurich vs. Aarau – It is the best against the worst today in the Swiss Axpo Super League. FC Zurich has not lost in ten matches at home this season. Bottom dwellers Aarau have only won one match on the road. If you are going to bet your lunch money this weekend, you might want to lay some money down on Zurich.
Americano vs. América – It is week 1 of the Copa Rio in Brazil and what better way to kick things off than to have a couple of teams with nearly the same name battle it out to see who is the king of America.
Loughgall v Crusaders – Things haven’t quite gone as expected for Loughgall in the Irish Premier League this season. The Villagers have just six points from 22 matches. They’ll face stiff competition from The Crusaders FC Hatchetmen. Typing that name alone is enough to make me want to get on my knees and pray.
FC Midtjylland v Vejle – They might be missing a vowel or two, but FC Midtjylland have not missed a beat in Denmark’s top league this season. They are in second place just six points behind leaders FC Copenhagen. They take on a Vejle side that features the wonderfully named Nigerian Justice John Erhenede.
FC Wacker Tirol vs. FC Superfund – The good news is that FC Superfund are in second place in Austria. The bad news is that they are 16 points behind leaders SV Red Bull Salzburg. The worst news is that there are still teams left in the league that could change their names to corporations’ names.
Luch-Energia Vladivostok vs. FK Moscow – Nothing like a 7,000-km road trip to start off the season. FK Moscow travel seven time zones to take on Luch-Energia in Russian League football.
Sunday
Plymouth vs. Watford – What is second to worse team in the Premiership doing playing a mid-level English League Championship team? It is the FA Cup, of course, and after today one of these teams will have advanced to the semifinals.
Kazakhstan vs. Uzbekistan – My beloved Snow Leopards will continue their path to world domination by chomping on those lowly neighboring Uzbeks and spitting out the remains.

FYI, Uzbekistan laid a beatdown on Kyrgyzstan (where Superman (or Kal-El) is from)today, 6-0. Rumor has it they had kryptonite in their cleats. Ulugbek Bakaev, who is the only Uzbekistani on Kazakhstan side, FC Tobol Kostanay, scored a hat trick.
Plymouth vs. Watford, a watchable match? I have my doubts.
