Weekend Watch: It’s a Scream

By: Bob | February 23rd, 2007

scream.jpgYou have to reckon that out of the thousands of football matches that will be played this weekend that at least a few will be epic. Won’t it suck if you miss the best game ever? You better watch every single one of them, or at least keep an eye on the randomly selected matches below.

Saturday

13th Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov’s Cup – The Father of Turks might have passed on a few months ago but his legacy will always be remembered through this football tournament in Turkmenistan. My money is on a Turkmen team winning the competition.

Dunfermline vs. Partick Thistle - It is time for Round 5 of the Scottish Cup. Dunfermline won the whole enchilada bin 1961 and 1968. Partick Thistle last captured it in 1921. None of the current players played on that team.

Madureira vs. América - It is time for the semifinals of the Copa Guanabara to be played in Brazil. Your Wikipedia fact of the week about America: “One controversial aspect about the club is the official mascot: the Diabo (devil), depicted as a red demon complete with horns, pointy beard, curled moustache, a long fat arrow-pointed tail, hooved feet and a black cape. The club’s old stadium was nicknamed Caldeirão do Diabo (”Devil’s Cauldron”). As of 2006 some of the club’s fans, supported by the Evangelical Christian manager, tried to replace the devil with the United States bald eagle, claiming that the devil was unlucky. But, since the devil is traditional, it is not yet certain whether the old mascot will actually be ousted.”

Red Star vs. Partizan - The latest edition of the “eternal derby” in Belgrade sees Red Star 12 points clear of second place Partizan. A win or draw will likely means Red Star will be on their way to their third league title in four years. Expect lots of YouTube videos of fans going nuts at this one.

Sunday

Ñublense vs. Palestino - Satan will also be on display in Chile where the Red Devils of Ñublense take on Palestino, who happen to sport the colors of the Palestine flag.

Cartagines vs. Brujas - First place is at stake when these two teams meet in Costa Rica league action. Cartagines is an interesting club. They are the oldest club in Costa Rica and have spent 88 of their 90 years in the First Division. In all that time they have also only won three championships. Perhaps this is the year to make it number four?

FC Eindhoven vs. FC Den Bosch - You probably know a thing or two about the other team in Eindhoven, PSV, but did you know that FC Eindhoven has been playing in the Dutch Second Division since 1977? They are currently in last place but don’t have to worry about relegation since teams in the division below are amateurs and can’t be promoted into the Eerste Divivisie.

Chelsea vs. Arsenal - By law someone must win the Carling Cup and that someone will be one of these two teams.
