Weekend Watch: It’s Electric

hair.jpgYou’ve been a slave to the man all week and now it is time to drown your sorrows by staring at a glass screen and watching grown men play a child’s game. While your hair stands on end as you cheer your favorite team to victory, keep an eye on some of the other football matches this weekend.

Saturday

Vélez Sarsfield vs. Newell’s Old Boys – It is time once again for football to be played in Argentina. Everyone is hoping that the fan violence that plagued the league last season goes away and today we’ll see how the fans greet new Velez Sarsfield coach Ricardo La Volpe, who was driven out of town following Boca Juniors’ late season collapse last year.

Dag & Red vs. Rushden & D’monds – No, this isn’t a World Wrestling tag team match, but rather a contest featuring a pair of teams in the English Nationwide Conference. Dagenham & Redbridge F.C. are eight points clear on top of the table while their opponents are languishing in 15th place.

Santiago Wanderers vs. Antofagasta – In the Quechua language, Antofagasta means “town of the great saltpeter bed”. In the football language, Antofagasta means “team that is in last place in the Primeria Division in Chile”.

All African Amputee TournamentPlayers worth rooting for.

Sunday

Vecindario vs. Hercules – Don’t get too used to seeing Vercindario in the Spanish Second Division. They are nine points clear at the bottom of the table and are destined for relegation. Mighty Hercules has been less than mighty this season and are merely a mid-table team. They do have the wonderfully named forward Piti, however.

FC Carl Zeiss Jena vs. SC Rot-Weiß Essen – You might be wondering who Carl Zeiss Jena is and why he fields a team in the Bundesliga Second Division. Glad you asked. The club was founded in May of 1903 by workers at the Carl Zeiss optics factory. No word if the players get discounts on spectacles these days. They might be better off without glasses so they can’t read the league table and see that they are in the relegation zone.

Tacuary vs. 3 de Febrero – It really would be more poetic if the season in Paraguay kicked off on February 3rd with 3 de Febrero playing, but alas the season opener is on 11 de Febrero and it is unlikely the club is much interested in changing its name.

Adelaide United vs. Newcastle Jets – Holy shit, the A-League final is almost here. Melbourne Victory have already booked a spot and one of these two teams would like to join them.
