Weekend Watch: Keep Your Focus
By: Bob | February 16th, 2007
Have you ever stopped to think how many people around the world kick a ball around each weekend? Yeah, neither have I, but now that the thought is on our minds the answer is: a whole buttload. In places both far and wide there will be football played on Saturday and Sunday. Here are just a few matches for you to keep an eye on.
Saturday
Paços Ferreira vs. Sporting Lisbon – The race at the top of the Portugese Liga standings is a tight one with FC Porto a mere 3 points ahead of Sporting and 4 points clear of Benfica. Sporting will try to make up ground today against The Beavers from Paços Ferreira.
Toluca vs. América – Toluca have played five matches thus far in the Mexican Clasura tournament and they have come away with five draws. They’ll try to make it six draws in a row today against the always dangerous Club America.
Boston United vs. Shrewsbury – Did you know that Shrewsbury Town are the only team from Shropshire represented in the English Football League? Now you do. They also happen to have Ghanian international Derek Asamoah on their side, as well as Osagyefo Lenin Ernesto Burton-Godwin, who is from St. Kitts and Nevits and who prefers to go by the name Sagi Burton.
Sunday
Chateauroux vs. Strasbourg – If you are going to watch only one French Ligue 2 match today, watch this one. It is the only one on the schedule. It also features a Strasbourg team that is in the promotion zone taking on a Chateauroux side that is on the cusp of promotion themselves.
Al Ahli vs. Etoile Sahel – It is the African Super Cup with the African Champions League winners Al Ahli of Egypt taking on the champions of the African Confederation Cup Etoile Sahel of Tunisia. The match is being played in Ethiopia as part of the Confederation of African Football’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Trinidense vs. Guaraní – Optimism is on the air in Paraguay with the opening week of the Primera Division. Club Sportivo Trinidense – El Triqui – have won the third division title four times in history but have never lifted the trophy in the top division. Club Guaraní is the second oldest club in Paraguay and they have won the top league nine times, but the last time was way back in 1984.
Melbourne Victory vs. Adelaide United – The A-League Grand Final in Australia will be played in front of a standing room only crowd at the Telestra Dome in Melbourne. That soccer thing might just catch on in Australia after all.
