Weekend Watch: Make yourself Comfortable
By: Bob | March 30th, 2007
Life returns to normal this weekend now that those silly little international games are over and club football has resumed. There are a couple of cup finals being played, some critical matches in many leagues and probably a few games that you could care less about. Here is a random sampling of what is on tap for the 48 hours when you don’t have to leave your couch.
Saturday
Bayern Munich v Schalke 04 - Bayern are nine points back of Bundesliga leaders Schalke with only 8 games remaining. I have never been confused with a math major but methinks that this is a must-win game for Bayern.
Lyon v Girondins Bordeaux - It is the final of the French League Cup and the Stade de France should be rocking. Lyon are going to win their sixth straight Ligue 1 title this year but they have only won the French League Cup once, back in 2001. Bordeaux were Ligue 1 runners-up last season and are currently in third place. Their lone French League Cup title was in 2002. France Offside Sam with the preview.
Liverpool v Arsenal – Someone has to finish third in the English Premier League and someone has to finish fourth. This game could go a long ways towards deciding which teams ends up where.
Mexican League Football - I don’t do a very good job of covering the Mexican league but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth watching. Our man Chris breaks down the weekend action better than I ever could on the Mexico Offside.
Sunday
Benfica v FC Porto - A classic derby that becomes even more classic when you consider that Porto are one point clear of Benfica at the top of the Superliga table.
Bristol Rovers v Doncaster - What the heck is the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final and why are these two playing in it? Good question. The competition is reserved for teams in the lower two divisions of England’s Football League. In previous years it has been called the Associate Members Cup, Freight Rover Trophy, Sherpa Vans Trophy, Leyland DAF Cup, Autoglass Trophy, Autowindscreens Shield, LDV Vans Tophy and the Football League Trophy. No matter the name, neither of these teams has ever won it.
Mictlan v Suchitepequez - Your Wikipedia fact of the week about the Guatemalan club Mictlan: “In Aztec mythology, Mictlan was the lowest (ninth) level of the underworld, located far to the north. Except for warriors who died in battle, people who died when hit by lightning and women who died in childbirth, people went to Mictlan after death. The journey was difficult and took four years, but the dead were aided by the psychopomp, Xolotl.” You may also know that there is a rapper who calls himself Mictlan.
