Weekend Watch: New Beginnings
By: Daryl | February 1st, 2008Saturday
Portsmouth vs Chelsea
Harry Redknapp gets to road-test his January signings Jermain Defoe and Milan Baros when he takes on Avram Grant’s gang at Fratton Park. Also worth watching for the confused look on Defoe’s face when he gets to start a game.
Aberdeen vs Hamilton Academicals
Hamilton Accies actually lost their Scottish FA Cup Fourth Round tie to Brechin City, but were reprieved when it was discovered that Brechin fielded two ineligible players. Hamilton are top of the Scottish Frist Division. Aberdeen are fifth in the Scottish Premier and would probably have preferred to face Brechin, who are mid-table in he Second Division.
Sunday
Ghana vs Nigeria
The big Africa Cup of Nations cup quarterfinal promises to be a battle. Ghana are the hosts, Nigeria are in a bit of a mess. The Black Stars beat Nigeria 4-1 in a friendly last year and the Super Eagles want revenge. We’ll be LiveBlogging Ghana vs Nigeria on World Cup Blog as part of our Africa Cup of Nations coverage.
Ajax vs Feyenoord
Second plays third in the always exciting Dutch Eredivisie. Ajax will have new signing Sammy Kufour available after his free transfer from Roma. Both teams are tied on 41 points, and need to start eating away at first place PSV Eindhoven’s eight point lead.
Fenerbahce vs Galatasaray
It’s THE big derby in the quarter-finals of the Turkish Cup. The two Istanbul teams meet on the Anatolian side of town, with league leaders Galatasaray hoping to break the dismal run of failing to win at Fenerbahce since 1999. Still, there’s always the second leg.
Fiorentina vs AC Milan
The battle for fourth place is on. Fiorentina have it and Milan want it. This weekend we’ll found it if this little Pato fella can make good in the big games.

Dons and Accies will be a good one. Hamilton have looked like promotion favorites all season, and Aberdeen may be getting a look at a side they’ll be facing a bit more often next season. That’s if the weather doesn’t continue to kill all the fixtures in Scotland, that is.
