Weekend Watch: Oh My!
By: Bob | February 2nd, 2007
The best part of the week it is here and now it is time to do what you do best: watch hours and hours of men in shorts running around kicking a ball. Who says that there isn’t a purpose to life? While you undoubtedly will be screaming ohhhhh and ahhhhh as you watch your favorite teams this weekend, here are a few games also worth keeping an eye on.
Saturday
Juventus vs. AA Ponte Preta – If there is a phone book of football team names from around the world, Brazil’s AA Ponte Preta might be listed first. For those familiar with American politics, you might interested to learn that their nickname is the Macaca. George Allen would be so proud.
York vs. Tamworth – In last place in the English Nationwide Conference, Tamworth can take solace in knowing they are merely the 92nd worst team in England. Today they face promotion hungry York who played their games at KitKat Cresent. Must be fun playing on a pitch made of chocolate.
Universidad de Concepción vs. Coquimbo Unido – A lot of conceiving went on at my university but we never had players like the ones who play for Universidad de Concepcion in Chile. Today they battle the mighty Pirates of Coquibo Unido who oddly enough have an Iranian-Chilean football player named Alí Manuel Manouchehri Moghadam Kashan Lobos on their team.
Olimpia vs. Nacional – They may or may not be ready to get the party started in Paraguay with the opening week of the Primera Division hanging in the balance because of internal squabbling. Come on you suits, let the lads play already.
Sunday
Thailand vs. Singapore – After walking off the pitch for 15 minutes in protest of a penalty call in their 2-1 loss in the first leg of the ASEAN championship, Thailand probably can’t sink any lower, but they sure can try when they host Singapore for the second leg.
Melbourne Victory vs. Adelaide United – It doesn’t get much hotter than the A-League semifinals in Australia, but that is because they are played in the middle of summer Down Under. These two teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg and I’m predicting that first one to 1 wins.
Zacapa vs. Comunicaciones – There must have been a communications breakdown because this Guatemalan league match featuring Communicaciones has been postponed until March.

Bob. Come on. Marseille. Paris Saint-Germain. No disrespect to the Guatemalans, but OM-PSG is the biggest game this weekend, and I say this without my France Offside bias.

Oh and also: AA Gent, a Belgian club, comes before AA Ponte Preta. Tsk tsk.
