Weekend Watch: Ride ‘em Cowboy
By: Bob | July 20th, 2007
After lying on the beach for a few hours during their summer vacations we are starting to see players trickle back on to the pitch for exhibition that mean little other than a big paycheck for their clubs. That can only mean that it won’t be long before our weekends are filled with more football games to watch than time permits. For now we must get by with those meaningless exhibitions and with leagues that play their games in the summer. Here’s a smattering of the action that will take place this weekend.
Saturday
Los Angeles Galaxy v Chelsea – The entire world will be tuning in to see Kevin Harmse, Ante Jazic and Quavas Kirk take on Chelsea in the World Series of Football. The winner will play the Boston Red Sox in a best of seven series.
Bayern Munich v Werder Bremen – This would be a tasty contest if the Bundesliga was already underway, but it is not. Instead this is part of the preseason League Cup. The six-team tournament comprises last season’s Bundesliga top four, German Cup winners Nuremberg and second division champions Karlsruhe. It ends with the final in Leipzig on July 28.
Brondby v FC Nordsjælland – How did I miss the start of the Danish DAS Ligaen season? Why did none of you step forward and point out this obvious oversight? They kicked things off in Demark last week and now we are on to round two with the Wild Tigers of FC Nordsjælland taking on the Drengene fra Vestegen (the boys from the western outskirts) of Brøndby IF.
FK Rostov-Na-Donu v Luch-Energiya Vladivostok – If you look at a map of the Russian Premier League and you turn your attention to the little dot on the far right that is where Luch-Ernergiya are located. All the way on the other side 10 time zones or so away is Rostov. If you look at the league table, Luch-Energiya are in 9th place and Rostov are in last.

Sunday
Argentina v Czech Republic – It is the final of the U-20 World Cup and if you haven’t seen the kids from Argentina play yet you should be locked away in a mental institution. They are pretty damn good and I am not just saying that because I own Sergio Aguero’s name.
Sport v Botafogo – We are in week 13 of the Brasileirao and it is Botafogo that is the team to beat. They are five points clear at the top of the table and will look to widen the lead against seventh place Sport Club de Recife.
Olmedo v Macará – Olmedo captured the Primera Fase 2007 in Ecuador. Will they have enough to win the Segunda Fase 2007? We shall see. Their opponent today, Macará offers this Wikipedia fact: “The sky blue color on their jersey was chosen as a sign of admiration and to resemble on the field, the powerful Uruguayan National Team, first Olympic and World Champion.”
The Homeless World Cup – The homeless population in Copenhagen will increase for the next couple of weeks as teams from around the world compete for the right to lift a slab of concrete.
