Weekend Watch: See the TV, Become the TV
By: Bob | October 20th, 2006
Lots of big matches this weekend in the world of football. While you are busy watching some of the giants slug it out, you might just want to keep an eye on these tilts as well.
Saturday
Norwich vs. Cardiff – Wouldn’t it save us all some time if we promoted Cardiff to the Premiership now and relegated Watford to the Championship?
Twente Enschede vs. Excelsior – In Latin, Excelsior means “higher”. In the Dutch Eredivisie, it means “mid-table team”.
Werder Bremen vs. Bayern Munich – Two German heavyweights, perhaps the two best teams in the Bundesliga this season, face one another in a match that might be so high scoring that Oliver Kahn suffers whiplash.
U.A.N.L vs. Guadalajara – The official name for Mexico’s U.A.N.L. is Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, but you can just call them Tigres for short.
Sunday
Chicago vs. New England – This might just be the top match up in the first round of the MLS playoffs and I’m not just saying that because I have a man crush on the Fire’s Nate Jaqua.
Marseille vs. Lyon – If second-place Marseille has any hope of ending Lyon’s 75-year reign atop French Ligue 1 they have to win this one at home.
Maritimo vs, Beira Mar – Fans of the Portuguese side Beira Mar are known as Paixadores, the Fishermen. They take on Madeira Islands’ own Maritimo for supremacy of the high seas.
Molde vs. Hamarkameratene – My favorite team name in Norway is Ham-Kam. The Ham-Kammers face a Molde side that is staring relegation right in its ugly face.
