Weekend Watch: Smells Like… Victory

Kelly Smith Smells Like Victory

International football is all very nice. Especially if you’re Scottish. But with the Women’s World Cup now in full swing, the menfolk get back to the bread and butter of good old fashioned domestic football.

Saturday
Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal
Ah, the North London derby. Arsenal visit Spurs at White Hart Lane early on Saturday, where opposing supporters will hold hands and sing Kumbaya. Or maybe not. Either way, Trent’s already got this one covered.

Bayern Munich vs Schalke 04
Big spending Bayern are back on top of the Bundesliga after having a nightmare last season. This Saturday they host lasts season’s runner-up Schalke 04.

Sao Paulo vs Santos
1st place Sao Paulo play 3rd placed Santos in Brazil’s Campeonato Série A.

Real Madrid vs Almeria
Real look to continue their so far perfect start to the La Liga season by beating promoted Almeria at home. But things aren’t always that smooth at the Bernabéu.

Chicago Fire vs New York Red Bulls
Chicago’s Blanco inspired late season season push for the playoffs continues against Bruce Arena’s Red Bulls, while LA Galaxy can only look on and wonder what might have been.

Brazil vs China
Women’s World Cup hosts China versus one of the favourite teams. Both won their opening games, so this could decide who’s top dog in Group D. Also worth watching just to see Marta Vieira da Silva in action.

Sunday
Monaco vs Paris St Germain
With Lyon not quite looking their old all-conquering self, Ligue 1 has opened up a little. Moncao are currently in 4th place, while PSG have only lost once, but have drawn 5 out of their 7 games so far.

River Plate vs Lanus
River started the season slow, but last week they gave Velez Sarsfield such a 5-0 beating that Velez coach Ricardo La Volpe (of World Cup smoking fame) nearly resigned. 8th place River will look to continue their revival at home to 4th place Lanus.

Juventus vs Udinese
Newly promoted Juventus (that still sounds weird doesn’t it) sit on top of Serie A after two games. Can a team with Jean-Alain Boumsong on the books be the real deal? We’ll know more after they play Udinese.

Know of a game happening this weekend that we should follow or be excited about? Feel free to hype it in the comments.
