Weekend Watch: It’s Electric
By: Bob | May 18th, 2007
The football world is like a non-stop party where the fun never ends. We have a full slate this weekend including the final round of the Bundesliga, the ridiculously good race in Spain, a heated Mexican rivalry, an MLS derby and a little cup in England. Your eyes are going to be very busy so here are a few games to help keep you focused.
Saturday
Napoli v Modena - This should be three easy points for Napoli in Serie B. That means we all could be three points closer to seeing Sofia Loren without clothing. Come on Modena, come on! Meanwhile, Juventus will be promoted back to Serie A if they win on the road against Arezzo.
VfB Stuttgart v Energie Cottbus – Stuttgart are two points clear of Schalke 04 and in the driver’s seat heading into the final weekend in the Bundesliga. They play a very average Energie Cottbus side. Meanwhile, Schalke host Arminia Bielefeld, another mid-table team. There will be a lot of nervous fans in Germany on Saturday.
Lokomotiv v Levski Sofia - Bulgarian champions and leaders Levski Sofia play city rivals Lokomotiv in a match that could send the league title to either club. Victory for Levski, two points clear with two games remaining, would hand them a second successive title. Three points at home for Lokomotiv, who have an easy final fixture against winless Chernomorets Burgas, could shatter Levski’s hopes.
Real Espana v Marathon - Trophy alert! It is the second leg of the final in Honduras with the teams level 0-0.
Chelsea v Manchester United – It is the FA Cup final and I imagine you already know all you need to know about it.
Sunday
Chivas USA v Los Angeles Galaxy - Never mind that these two teams met just a few weeks ago, this is a derby and as far as MLS goes it is one of the best ones around.
Exeter v Morecambe - It is the game the world has been waiting for. It is the English Nationwide Conference Playoffs Final and it will be played at Wembley Stadium. Exeter made it here after beating Oxford 4-3 in penalties. Morecambe earned the chance for promotion by knocking off York City in the semifinals.
Atletico Madrid v Barcelona - It is another exciting weekend in La Liga with the top three teams all on the road. Barcelona face sixth place Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid visit sixth place Recreativo Huelva, who are still in contention for a UEFA Cup spot. Sevilla will try to shake off their UEFA Cup hangover when they play at 13th place Deportivo La Coruna.
AZ Alkmaar v Ajax Amsterdam - The season has been over for a couple of weeks yet they continue to play on in Holland. This game is the first leg of the Dutch Eredivisie Champions League Playoffs Final. There is a lot of money at stake for the club that wins and gets to suckle from the golden cow that is the Champions League.
Chivas v America - It is the Mexican Clasura Semifinals and these clubs really don’t like one another. America leads 1-0 heading into the second leg of El Clasico de Clasicos.
FC Porto v CD Das Aves - It is the final weekend of action in Portugal and three teams could come away with the title. Porto appear to be in control. If they beat lowly Aves they will lift the trophy. If not, well, lots of things could happen.
