Weekend Watch: Try and Look Innocent

Never touched him ref

Here’s what happening this weekend:

Saturday

New England Revs vs Houston Dynamo
MLS 2008 is back as of Saturday, and the must-see game is a repeat of the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup. Houston took the silverware both times these two met on the big stage, so the Revs will be looking for a little slice of revenge to start the new season.

Rangers vs Celtic
It’s been a while since the last Old Firm derby. These two were supposed to meet in January, but the game was postponed as a mark of respect to Phil O’Donnell’s tragic death. Players from both teams should be well-rested after the mass Glasgow pullout from Scotland’s midweek friendly against Croatia. As usual, these two are challenging for the title, withe Celtic currently trailing by three points. Read our preview on Celtic Offside. And if there are any Rangers fans out there who want to represent their team on The Offside, read this and get in touch.

Beşiktaş vs Fenerbahçe
It’s tight at the top in Turkey. Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are joint top on 60 points, with Fenerbahçe holding 1st place thanks via the slenderest of goal difference margins. Meabwhile Sivasspor and Beşiktaş are both just two points behind in third and fourth place respectively. So win, lose or draw, someone’s going to be disappointed at the end of this Istanbul derby.

Sunday

Changsha Ginde vs Changchun Yatai
MLS isn’t the only league kicking off over the weekend, as the 2008 Chinese Super League gets underway. Surprise 2007 champions Changchun Yatai begin their defence of the title with a trip to Changsha Ginde, and will hope to avoid being labeled one season wonders.

Liverpool vs Everton
It’s the Merseyside derby, but it’s also a six pointer in the battle for fourth place. Liverpool currently occupy the last Champions League spot, but Everton want it. The Toffees are just two points behind, so an Everton win at Anfield would see the two teams change places.

Real Madrid vs Sevilla
Both sides lost important games last week and need to get back on track. Sevilla fell away from the coveted La Liga fourth place (Champions League again, fourth is the new first and all that) by losing to Atletico Madrid last week, while Real’s lead over Barcelona at the top was trimmed to just four points when they lost 3-2 to Valencia. Real may be at home, but Sevilla will fancy their chances after already beating Madrid three times this season.

Any other games we should know about?

Great weekend of derbies … Glasgow, Merseyside and Istanbul. You just just smell the mutual dislike. Should be fun.

I gotta second Shazback. The Coupe de la Ligue (French League Cup) final is between two teams currently in danger of relegation. Chances are that at least one of these teams (possibly both) will be relegated. But whoever wins the final gets a UEFA Cup berth…
