Weekend Watch: What are you going to wear?

By: Bob | June 29th, 2007

venezuela-fans.jpgThey say April is the cruelest month but they never looked at a football calendar at the end of June. While most of the world’s players have their feet up on lounge chairs and their bellies full of liquid pleasure, there are still some games being played but they are few and far between. By few and far between I mean Russia, Brazil, MLS and the highly underrated Intertoto Cup. Here are a few games to keep an eye on if you are so inclined.

Saturday

FC Moscow v Zenit - Four out of the top six teams in Russia right now are from Moscow. It is a team from St. Petersburg, however, that is on top of the table. That team is Zenit, a team that knows how to win on the field and to take care of its fans.

Fluminense FC v Botafogo - It is week 8 in the Futebol Brasileiro although I have a theory that the season never really ends in Brazil. Botafogo are currently on top of the table and it is always a good time when they take on their Rio rivals Fluminense. Your Wikipedia fact of the week: Botafogo’s first mascot was Donald Duck, abandoned due to royalties issues.

Baku v Dacia - A club team from Azerbaijan doing battle with a club team from Moldova. That can only mean that the Intertoto Cup is in full swing. A prelude of sorts to the UEFA Cup, the competition includes teams like Dacia, which are based in the Moldovan capital Chisinau. I once taught English to a player who played on the team a few years back. The brushes with fame we have in life….These two teams finished 1-1 in the first leg.

North Korea U-20 v Panama U-20 - It is the start of the U-20 World Cup in Canada and no matter how much you’ll want some of the North Korean kids to join your favorite team you can’t have them.

Sunday

Honka v TVMK - More Intertoto Cup fun today with the mighty Jokkes from the Finnish club Honka taking on the mighty Fanera from the Estonian club TVMK. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw and with everyone agreeing that the duty free shopping on the ferry between Finland and Estonia is second to none.

Brazil v Chile - Want a dark horse team for the 2010 World Cup? Of course you do. That team is Brazil. I kid because I love. Chile is actually a country I have my eyes on mainly because they have some excellent young players, some of which are playing in the Copa America. Check back in with me about this in 2009.

Brommapojkarna v GAIS - If you have a thing for loveable losers, you might want to consider adopting Brommapojkarna as your team in Sweden this year. They have just one win from 11 games and have given up 15 more goals than they have scored. Perhaps they’ll have better luck with the club’s other big sport.
