Weekend Watch: Who you callin’ a Leatherhead?
By: Bob | November 10th, 2006
Some matches to keep an eye on while you do whatever the hell it is you do on the weekends…..
Saturday
Torquay vs. Leatherhead – It is English FA Cup time which means plenty of upsets and plenty of teams you have never heard of. Much to my dismay, Leatherhead is not a biker gang or the kid at school who never washes his hair, but rather a team from Surrey nicknamed the Tanners. They play in the always entertaining Isthmian League First Division.
CS Sfaxien vs. Al Ahli – After a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the African Champions League final, the two teams are back at it again in Tunisia with defending champions Al Ahli missing midfielder Amro Samaka who recently failed a drug test. Geez, who hasn’t failed on of those?
Besiktas vs. Sivasspor – Playing in Turkey’s top league for the first time in their 40-year history, Sivasspor is living up to their nickname, “Brave People”, and are in third place.
Urawa Red Diamonds vs. Yokohama F. Marinos – Urawa’s lead over Gamba in the J-League is just 3 points and today they face Yokohama, which used to have two teams before the Flugels and the Marinos merged into one might F. Marinos.
Sunday
New England vs. Houston – The MLS Cup Final will be played in front of a sold out crowd in Dallas and you can bet in most newspaper in the US there will be a one paragraph story about the match on page 6 on Monday.
Mons-Bergen vs. Standard Liege – The Belgian side Mons-Bergen should never be confused with the world famous Mons Venus strip club in Tampa, Florida.
Tenerife vs. Xerez – Not only do they make fine copy machines, but Xerez also has a team in first place in Spain’s second division.
