Weekend Watch: With a friend like this

weekend-watch-facial.jpgWhat a great time of year it is. There is football action all over the world and you can watch games almost every day of the week. Of course, it is the weekend when the couch potato in all of us can really come out. This weekend sees some tasty tilts in England, Spain, Italy and my own backyard. Here are some randomly selected games to keep an eye on while you celebrate the good times.

Saturday

Barcelona v Sevilla – Sevilla have looked incredible during the early start of the La Liga season. They laid an egg in the Champions League earlier this week. Barcelona has looked very vulnerable in the early part of the La Liga season. They were dominant in the Champions League this week. Which Barca and Sevilla sides will show up at the Nou Camp?

Werder Bremen v Stuttgart – Last year it was Stuttgart who pipped Werder Bremen at the end of the season to capture the Bundesliga title. This year both teams find themselves in the middle of a large pack chasing Bayern Munich.

QPR v Watford – Without a loss in six games in the English Championship, Watford look primed to make a quick return to the English Premier League. Today they face a QPR side that has not won in its first five games and sits only about Sheffield Wednesday at the bottom of the table.

Sunday

Manchester United v Chelsea – They might have played each other a thousand times last season and you might be utterly sick of seeing both teams, but you and I and everyone else will tune in for this one if for no other reason than to remember what it is like not having Jose Mourinho looking pained on the Chelsea bench.

Hibernian v Celtic – If Hibs harbor any notion of turning the usual two-team race in Scotland into a three-team tussle, they’ll want to pick up points against front runners Celtic at home, especially with the visitors coming off a tough Champions League defeat in Ukraine.

Roma v Juventus – How strong is the Old Lady this year? We’ll get an excellent gage when they head on the road to face the hottest team in Europe.

PSV Eindhoven v Feyenoord Rotterdam – Last year the wheels fell off the Feyenoord wagon and they watched from the mid-table as PSV captured the Eredivisie championship. Their early form this season indicates that Feyenoord are ready to challenge for the title once again.

Portland Timbers v Atlanta Silverbacks – I’ll take the rare opportunity to hype my local team. They are in the semifinals of the USL First Division playoffs. Today’s match will be the second leg of an aggregate series. The other semifinal features the Seattle Sounders and the Puerto Rico Islanders. If you do tune into the Timbers game on Fox Soccer Channel, I’ll do my best to get drunk, streak and wave hello to you.

Know of a game that we should follow or be excited about? Feel free to hype it in the comments.

Both of the Old Firm have good matches this Sunday. Celtic goes to Easter Road against Hibs, and Rangers takes on Aberdeen, who have been underperforming, but are still capable of getting back into their 3rd place form from last season.
