Welcome Back Beckham

By: Daryl | July 20th, 2009

Seems David Beckham wasn’t expecting such a hostile reception from LA Galaxy fans on his return to the Home Depot Center this weekend. It probably didn’t help that they were playing AC Milan either.

I’m finding it hard to have too much sympathy for old Goldenballs on this one. You can’t abscond and then expect a heroes welcome on your return, especially not when you’re more than likely leaving again in a few months.

Those banners (via 101GG) make things pretty clear. Beckham is going to have to work very very hard to turn this situation around.

Footage from the actual football match (which finished 2-2) is below:

I've figured it out. At least in my head, it seems that Beckham is on loan to the LA Galaxy from AC Milan. Except that the Galaxy pays the bills. You put your head around it, and that is what it comes out as- how else do you explain the mindset of DB?

I don't understand why Galaxy fans are so angry. I mean, in the US teams move to other cities for money.
  • I heart Beckham.

    Who cares about Juve offside.
I was talking about the offside (home page) but as always you need to butt in and try to be a "crocker shit"

    Grow up Ladri.

David Beckham sucks. DC beat them every time they came here..

true about Beckham coming for the weather and the money.
  • Dhaw
Yeah we should be publishing stories no ones interested in, like Roma’s non-moves in the transfer market.

Or maybe how dumb juve was to not spend 20million on D'agostino but end up spending 21.5 on Melo and giving away Marchionnin eh ?
  • What's funny is that I think a lot of people would have forgiven him easily if he'd just told the truth and apologized for his behavior. ("Yes, my people effed up the Galaxy management. Yes, I phoned it in last year. Yes, I'm afraid I have viewed my commitment to the Galaxy as less important than my commitment to everywhere else. Yes, I'll be going elsewhere when the season's done. But I'm sorry for what I've done to the team and I'll make extra effort to do the best while I'm here."

Now that he's chosen the "lie through your teeth" option instead, he's put MLS fans in the position of have to choose between supporting our teams and our league or supporting him. So fans will continue hate him regardless of how he plays this year, especially after juvenile "how can you act this way to somebody as special and important as me" displays like last night and at last week's press conference.

I hardly think he was expecting a heroes welcome, that group of supporters clearly stepped over the line with what they were saying. He's endured much worse in Britain, hanging effigies and death threats and all. He still stepped up and had a huge hand in both of the goals

as much as i hate espn's coverage of just about everything, i do have to give them credit for calling los angeles out on booing beckham while showing unbridled support for manny ramirez...
  • I'm not sure he's going to be able to turn this around, however, the whole "Beckham Experiment" nonsense has seemingly created one positive...

...there's a lot more atmosphere at Galaxy matches.

He was never going to make soccer popular over here- he said it many times during press conferences, but his publicists said differently. He came for the money and the weather- that's all. No big deal.
  • Beckham hasn't really shown much loyalty to the Galaxy fans, he's made it perfectly clear he would rather be playing in Europe. Who knows, maybe he'll be back in the Premier League soon.
  • Sterling
As a recent LA transplant from NorCal, I find this all very entertaining.

I can't stand the Galaxy (Bay Area native, therefore, Quakes supporter), but my boss' boss supports them (b/c he's a native Angeleno).

He told me that booing Beckham was the highlight of yesterday's game.

Oh, and watching Ronaldinho hustle for the full 90. :P
  • Dhaw
Jeez. Enough of this Beckham non-sense.
The offside is turning into a frikkin British Tabloid.
