What’s the Most Competitive League in the World?

By: Daryl | February 26th, 2008

AllesvenskanNot sure if you read The Knowledge in The Guardian, but if you like fascinating little factoids then you could definitely do a lot worse. Basically readers mail in obscure trivia questions, and then various Guardian journalists gather their smartypants together, get some research done, and come up with some answers.

Recently someone asked what the most competitive top division in Europe was, if competitive is defined as the number of different teams to win the title in recent years. I’ll give you a hint: It’s not the Premier League.

The original questioner suggested the League of Ireland Premier Division. The Republic of Ireland’s 12 team top flight has produced seven different winners (Drogheda, Shelbourne, Bohs, Cork, St Pats, Derry and Dundalk) since 1995.

The Swedish Allsvenskan also gets a mention. The 16 team division has had eight champions (Malmo, Gothenburg, Hammarby, AIK Solna, Djurgarden, Halmstad, Helsingborg and Elfsborg) since 1995.

Finally, the tiny San Marino top flight, the 15 team Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio has had eight different teams lift the trophy (Tre Fiori Fiorentino, Libertas Borgo Maggiore, SS Folgore/Falciano, SC Faetano, Cosmos Serravalle, SP Domagnano, Pennarossa Chiesanuova and SS Murata) since 1995.

Why 1995? I think just because that was the date the original questioner used in order to demonstrate the League of Ireland’s parity.

So one interesting question: how does Major League Soccer compare? MLS is theoretically the most evenly conceived football league in the world, with salary caps and the worst teams getting the first draft picks and so on and so forth. MLS has produced either five (DC United, Chicago Fire, Kansas City Wizards, San Jose Earthquakes and Los Angeles Galaxy) or six (if you count Houston Dynamo as a separate team to the cup-winning San Jose side) different MLS Cup winners since 1996 in a league of varying size. Which could be a lot worse, but doesn’t make it the most competitive.

Does anyone out there have a suggestion for a league outside of Ireland, Sweden and San Marino that you could argue is the most competitive in the world?

The Brazillian League also had a good variety of champions since 1995:
    Botafogo - 95
    Grêmio - 96
    Vasco - 97, 00
    Corinthians - 98, 99, 05
    Atlético Paranaense - 01
    Santos - 02, 04
    Cruzeiro - 03
    São Paulo - 06, 07

The “Malaysia Super League” isn’t a bad challenger, I think :

    8-club format :
    1995 Pahang FA
    1996 Sabah FA
    1997 Sarawak FA
    1998 Penang FA (Penang E & O)
    1999 Pahang FA
    2000 Selangor FA
    2001 Penang FA (Penang E & O)
    2002 Perak FA
    2003 Perak FA
    2004 Pahang FA
    2005 Perlis FA
    2006 Negeri Sembilan FA

    13-club format :
    2007 Kedah FA

That’s 9 (Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Pahang, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Sarawak, Sabah) winners in 13 seasons, with only one season as a 13-club format, the previous format being 8-club…

This season it looks unlikely that another club will add their name to the winner’s list, unless Terengganu, Johor or PDRM find some pretty amazing form. (Wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Super_League_2007-08)

I think that could qualify as the “most competitive” league since 1995.

The Mexican Primera Division League is very competitive. Although they do have 2 tournaments per year I believe there have been 11 or 12 different teams since 1996 to win it in the Apertura or Clausura tournament.

The use of the word “competitive” is completely out of place here. Whoever asked the question in The Guardian’s article should have used “balanced” instead. In a balanced league, the level of each team is more or less the same compared to all the other teams, which is exactly the idea being conveyed here.

The french league could have been there if we go back 5 years ago. God damn Lyon.

    I still love you Junhino

Yeah, in the ten years before Lyon started winning, there were seven different winners (plus one title that was stripped from OM).

But here is something to consider - there was been a different second place finisher every year since Lyon took control of France.

The French “Championnat” was very competitive before Lyon.
We love Juninho but we do not like Lyon
