When Face meets Knee, Face usually loses

By: Bob | June 25th, 2007

It has been a couple of months since we have seen a keeper lay the smack down on a forward and that is a couple of months too long. Lillestrøm SK’s goalkeeper Heinz Müller, a man with a bit of a nasty reputation if you are to believe the chattering masses on YouTube, is the one left standing after his little dance with IK Start midfielder Geir Ludvig Fevang. As far as I can tell Müller didn’t receive a card from the referee nor is he likely to receive a card from Fevang next Christmas.

Yeah this was explained to me by a 15 year FIFA referee on how to handle this kind of action. It is a red card and a Penalty Kick for the blue team. It is assessed in this way because of the myth we are trying to dispell that a Goal Keeper has the right to defend themself. They have no such right when they indanger another players safety. It is the Referees job to protect the players on the pitch. He is esentially taking the law into his own hands and misapplying it, causing serious injury.
