When Graeme Souness Planted the Galatasaray Flag in Fenerbahçe’s Pitch
By: Daryl | September 18th, 2009When it comes to antagonizing opposition fans, Emmanuel Adebayor is a mere amateur next to Graeme Souness.
Souness was managing Galatasaray in 1996, and his team faced eternal rivals Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Cup final. It was a two legged cup tie, with Galatasaray winning 1-0 at home in the first leg, then claiming the cup with a 1-1 draw in Fenerbahçe’s Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
Which is when Souness decided to celebrate by taking a gigantic Galatasaray flag and plating it right in the middle of the Fenerbahçe pitch. The incident made him a hero with Galatasaray fans, but not so much with Fener fans.

Ha, no, not this time. It was actually Taylor from Man Utd Offside who reminded of this a couple of days ago.

There’s a good bit explaining this in the “Real Football Factories International” when they profile Turkey. Rambo from Fener didn’t take kindly to this!

I remember I once watched a feature on footballing rivalries and when the episode I was watching was about the rivalry between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, it did featured what you posted Daryl.
Now there’s the Manchester derby this weekend.

Plant a flag in your enemies stadium in Turkey = Instant Hero to the fans, no matter how terrible a manager you were.

Yeah, despite the cup win with Galatasaray, didn’t Souness disappoint in the league and get let go after one season?

Just found a 1995-6 final Turkish league table, and Souness finished fourth with Galatasaray, which I’m assuming is unacceptable no matter how many flags you plant on Fenerbahce’s pitch.
