Where do Spanish Bottle Throwers Get Their Aim?

By: Laurie | March 16th, 2008

In the headlines once again we have Spanish bottle throwers with deadly accurate aim.

Last year we had the Juande Ramos incident. Yesterday the target was Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Armando Riviero in the Betis v Athletic Bilbao game.

Ryan, who writes our Sevilla Offside blog, is covering this over at Center Holds It.

Well, tonight’s Betis v Athletic Bilbao game could be called ‘Botellazo 2: The Return’. During the game which was 2-1 in favor of the Basques, Athletic keeper Armando Riviero went behind the net to retrieve the ball for a goal kick. While walking back, a fan walked down to the edge of the stand and tossed what looked like a plastic bottle filled with water at the keeper. The bottle struck Armando in the right eye and he immediately fell to the ground wincing in pain. He was stretchered off and received several stitches in his eye.

The bottle-thrower was immediately turned in by other fans and has been banned from the stadium. And, since this isn’t exactly the first incident of violence, Betis could be facing sanctions from the Spanish Football Federation.

Maybe the next step is to make bottles contraband.

i cant believe this sort of thing is still happening in football, what a terrible incident. although it is just the actions of one fan, betis as a club should surely face heavy sanctions for allowing such an incident to happen twice?
